5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely riveting, 25 Sep 2006

I saw this on TV as it was originally transmitted last year and was spellbound.

I had only ever seen Lesley Sharp in 'Full Monty' but she is truly stupendous in this; if ever an actor made a part, then Lesley Sharp makes this - even with all the plaudits in the world, you could not adequately picture this - it really does have to be seen to be believed.

Personally, I did not rate Andrew Lincoln's performance but whether that was because he was eclipsed by Lesley Sharp we will never know - I think pretty well anyone could have played his character and been equally overshadowed.

The series itself is TV drama at it's best and was a welcome change from the usual Saturday night dross.

Series 2 is here, I believe, and has it's work cut out to be a worthy sequel.

This first series really is a hard act to follow.

Outstanding.

5.0 out of 5 stars Spine-chilling and gripping, 1 April 2006
By C. Blackburn "Psychology graduate" (England, UK.) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I somehow missed this when it was on TV, but I bought the DVDs on a whim and I'm very glad I did. I found the show truly gripping and couldn't wait for the next episode as each ended, probably because every episode is different to the others.. What a refreshingly original TV show amongst a lot of rubbish which is around at the moment.

I'd recommend it to anyone who likes psychological ghost stories- Afterlife is genuinely scary at times, particularly episode 3 about the boy who is believed to be schizophrenic but is actually being haunted by a ghost.
Although Afterlife is frightening, I found it interesting that I also felt empathy for most of the ghosts in the series because of the dilemmas they were in. Afterlife shows the point of view of the ghosts, as well as the live humans affected by them. This is not something which I have not often encountered when watching horror films or reading books about ghosts.

Lesley Sharp is amazing in Afterlife- truly believable and a very different role from other things I've seen her in- The Full Monty, Bob and Rose and so on. Her best performance.
I don't think Andrew Lincoln was quite as well-suited to this role as in more laddish roles like Simon in Teachers, but it was nice to see him try something different, and his performance is satisfactory, if not as striking as Sharp's.

My only qualm with the show is if you're a psychology student, like me, you might find it slightly irritating that the show portrays psychologists as being slightly insensitive, clinical, closed-minded individuals who apparently talk about Freud all the time. Still, that didn't stop me loving the programme.

I was slightly disappointed with the last episode because I expected everything to be wrapped up, for it to be quite final, but it did feel like a bit of an anti-climax. However, this suggested to me that they intend to make another series. I hope they do, as there is much potential for the characters to be explored further.
9/10.

5.0 out of 5 stars Haunting, disturbing class drama, 4 Nov 2005
This is a fantastic drama from ITV starring the monumental talent of Lesley Sharp in the role of psychic Alison Mundy, a woman haunted by her past and the spirits that never leave her. Great script, camera work and music and sterling support from Andrew Lincoln and a terrific supporting cast. Would recommend!!
