Read the fine print - for the rock historian only, 20 Nov 2005

This DVD documentary provides some interesting historical background to the rise of AC/DC up until the death of Bon Scott. I must say that I did find it informative. Unfortunately, although the DVD packaging does state that it is unauthorised and in the very fine print at the back it does say that it does not contain any original AC/DC music, this fact is not at all clear. It should have been more directly stated on the cover what this DVD actually is. The DVD contains almost exclusively a series of interviews with people who knew AC/DC and particularly Bon during the seventies. There are no original interviews with the Band except a couple of seconds from TV interviews back in the seventies and there is absolutely no AC/DC music on this disk whatsoever. Instead there is a backing track by some band playing a few non-ac/dc riffs. It would seem they were not allowed to use any ac/dc music on this film. The interviews include former band members such as Dave Evans and Colin Burgess it's interesting to hear their views on events in the early seventies and their thoughts on the Youngs, with a little hint of bitterness. On a more technical point, this disk is coded as region 0 which means that it is region free - can be played on all DVD players. However, as I found out when I played it on my own, very new multi-region, DVD player it displays in black and white. On my computer it plays as colour. This is not the first time this has happened with region 0 so be careful about that. Perhaps the best thing about it is that it contains a little footage of Bon rehearsing with a former (pre-AC/DC) band which is good to see but that by itself is not enough to recommend buying it. In short be warned by the fact that the AC/DC logo used on the DVD cover is not the standard band logo (the typeface) which should tell you something. I only realised in hindsight. Don't be disappointed.
