4.0 out of 5 stars Half-life...classic but u need the net, 28 Jan 2007

Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
Really really good set, has the expansion packs but you have to be connected to the internet to play...the CD doesn't have the games on it. I thought that was a bit annoying, but they're still great and its good value!

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the finest games ever made, 23 Dec 2005
By A. Dean - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Half-Life is truly an exemplary game. Responsible to a large extent for popularising (though, not introducing) the concepts of a coherent plot, memorable characters and the illusion of a larger world around you, to the first-person shooter genre, its importance cannot be overstated.

These days it still looks fairly attractive, graphically, though obviously dated to at least some extent. Still, it holds up well, and the play itself is as compelling as ever. Up until the last segment of the game, you will meet many well-realised (in a background character sense) characters, take place in many a tense shoot-out, and narrowly escape many excitingly scripted set-piece moments. The last portion is unfortunately an anti-climax, for reasons I cannot reveal without spoiling the plot. Still, up until then it is a thrilling ride.

Even now it is, at least, the equal of its similarly celebrated sequel, and a must-play for any self-declared games fan, as both an essential piece of history and an astounding example of a wonderful game - its developers first ever game, no less!

5.0 out of 5 stars A legend in gaming, 4 Oct 2006

Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
Even though this game is nearly a whole decade old, it has proven to be a classic beyond belief.

Half Life may have the typical story of an experiement gone wrong, and as a result dangerous alien species as well as soldiers attempting to 'cover up' the incident by any means nessercery, but the execution of such a story is one of the game's most famous points, you ARE Gordon Freeman, and you are in this terrible situation.

The gameplay is awesome, let that be known. You point and shoot at stuff, granted, not original, but it is still great even in this day and age. Before the chaos you are allowed to explore part of the facility and enjoy the atmosphere! You can 'talk' to scientists and security guards who are willing to help you in anyway possible, and prove to be highly intelligent and helpful, but only if you make the effort to protect them. There are also puzzles in plenty of varieties, from finding a different way out, pushing crates, or even jumping across strange objects.

The enemies are intelligent too, the average alien will go all out and attack you, they aren't trained in military tactics but prove to be dangerous in any case, an intimidating example would be the Gragantua, an armoured beast that can demolish anything in its path and spit flames at you. Your human foes are cunning too, they take cover when you are attacking, and can throw grenades and take up positions to tear you apart, so be careful! It is this very intelligence that has helped this game become so famous.

The gameplay does not change too much in "Blue Shift" and "Opposing Force" but if you enjoyed the original game then there is no doubt that you will enjoy these games. "Opposing Force" is my favourite of the expansions, as you play as one of the soldiers, and you can command different kinds of soldiers to help you out, and you get to fight some nasty new alien species too, who seem to be human in their intelligence, but of course bug-guns seem to be popular in their arsenal! "Blue Shift" is not too much different from the original Half Life, the fundamentals are almost the same, but great fun is expected in this short but sweet pack.

As for the online, most people have moved onto Half Life 2, but it is still great. Deathmatch is present, as well as Team Fortress Classic, a fun squad based game where you capture the flag or protect a player, there are radically different classes to play as, according to your tastes, from medics to heavy gunners, everyone is satisfied! Counter Strike is also available, either in this pack or to download for free, another squad game where you take on players in realistic sitatuions, and this is immensely popular, so its no suprise that this game was the first to feature updated to Half Life 2.

But if you are a single-player gamer who has finished it all, don't worry! The modding community is immense, and there are many fantastic levels to download, from just Half Life levels to full-on new games based on the same engine, with different gameplay fundamentals. And the best part? Most of these are free! Just dial up to the internet, hunt down any of the effective sites, which are mostly safe, and download from the many levels available. You can appreciate the creativity that goes into the best of the mods, and it can be so great that you can create your own levels! It's a tricky process that is also time consuming, but with time you can get the hang of it and create levels that could rival Valve, the creators of Half Life!

All of this is there at a great price, so if you don't have it, get started into the legend that has defined PC gaming!
