Product Description
War Child has spent the last three months inviting the best British artists to contribute brand new tracks to a unique on and off-line music project. The bands involved are Radiohead, Razorlight, Gorillaz, Keane and Faultline, Kaiser Chiefs, Magic Numbers, Manic Street Preachers, Zutons, Bloc Party, Antony and the Johnsons, The Coral, Damien Rice, Elbow, Maximo Park, Mylo, Hard-Fi, Emmanuel Jal, Tinariwen, Go! Team, Belle & Sebastian.

Each band has recorded a brand new track--no remixes, no b-sides, no 'versions'--for the project, and did so in 24 hours bridging the 8th and 9th September.

Funds raised by the charity's deal with Independiente Records will immediately go to their projects in Iraq and DR Congo. Further funds, profile and membership raised will go to maintain these projects and others in countries such as Afghanistan and Bosnia over the coming months.

I bought this album on download upon its Internet release and have played nothing else since. Good compilations are a mix of the familiar and the unusual, and this is a BRILLIANT compilation. There are a few cover versions - Kaiser Chiefs' version of Heard it through the grapevine is the stand-out cover - but every piece of original material deserves credit.
Elbow, Babyshambles and Bloc Party, bands I previously had little time for, are a revelation, but the two outstanding tracks are by artists I had no previous knowledge of: Belle & Sebastian and Emanual Jal. They are melodic and pack a lyrical punch. By highlighting these tracks I do the others an injustice: everyone will have different favourites but the best thing that can be said is that the album is more than the sum of its parts and the 22 tracks just fly by.
Money well spent, and hopefully, well used by this worthy cause.

I bought the album looking forward to belle & sebastians contribution, having read another review and listening to a preview on itunes, but for some reason the zutons and belle & sebastian tracks are absent on this cd, so be wary of that before you but it.

For those of you who remember and enjoyed the original Help! album back in 1995, I'm afraid you will likely be disappointed by its successor a decade later.

That's not to say that this album is a dud. There are some enjoyable moments, and some of the leading lights of the current British music scene feature with exclusive tracks. However, the 1995 album was a triumph (without a doubt worth 5 stars on a review like this), with almost every contribution a killer.

Sadly that is not the case with "Help: A Day In The Life". There are too many uninspiring and forgettable contributions, and this is a far less eclectic compilation than "Help!", focussing to a large extent on samey, guitar based bands; Mylo is the only representative of the electronica/dance genre. In comparison the original album featured KLF (One World Orchestra), Stereo MCs, Chemical Brothers, Massive Attack, Portishead and Orbital among more central Britpop trailblazers such as Blur, Suede, Charlatans, Stone Roses, Radiohead and Oasis. That made for a wonderfully wide ranging spread of musical styles, although remaining very much a British (and Irish) sounding album.

It is true to say that this album disappoints primarily in comparison to its illustrious predecessor. As a stand alone work, it is not too bad, hence the three stars I have awarded. Among the better tracks are those by Coldplay, Razorlight, Gorillaz (sounding more like Blur, really), Damian Rice, Tinariwen, Mylo, Elbow and Bloc Party - and maybe that's enough good stuff to justify a purchase.

And of course it's all in the name of "charidee" - for anyone who is interested, they should check out the War Child website, which includes details of the charitable work they undertake, as well as offering a number of exclusive tracks from leading artists (released monthly to subscribers). Most excitingly, you can download the original Help album there. I advise you to do so and give it a few listens - that might help those other reviewers here realise what it takes to make a five star album.
