4.0 out of 5 stars More French Baroque music on piano, 12 Mar 2006
By Alan Lekan (Boulder, CO) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
From the Hyperion media release: "With this third volume Angela Hewitt concludes her personal survey of Couperin's keyboard music and proves that, in the hands of someone as steeped in Baroque keyboard style as herself, music which was previously thought the exclusive domain of the harpsichordist can be successfully transferred to the modern piano. Unlike her programming on the previous discs Hewitt here only plays one complete Ordre (suite) - the hugely entertaining 13th with its wicked parody of a debauched masked ball. For the rest, after tackling a group of pieces from the 14th Ordre she chooses, almost as encores to her series, a wide selection of her favourite pieces taken from suites not featured previously."

Most inquiring about this CD will probably already have listened to Volume I or Volume II of Hewitt's Couperin music on piano, which were rather ground-breaking works given few if any recordings of Couperin's keyboard music done on the piano. So how does this third and last CD compare? While I have thoroughly enjoyed both previous volumes and relished in Hewitt's marvelous playing of this music on piano, I have to say this third volume did not catch my interest as much. Certainly Angela Hewitt's mastery of the composer and his music - most notably her scrupulous attention to detail to Couperin's precise score notations - is again most admirable here (assuming of course you like this music on piano versus the harpsichord). Her skill in the most-important ornamentations show both a well-studied approach and fine taste, integrating them into the tapestry of the music smoothly and attractively. As a result, she makes a strong case for this music on piano and brings out more nuance of expression in especially the slower movements. But I think it is mostly the compositions themselves that did not captivate me as much compared to the granduer, inventiveness and charm of those in Volume I or the deeply touching, poetic melancholy tones of Volume II (Couperin late works).

But of course, the selections here are not without wonderful highlights - such as the moving, introspective works found on tracks 19, 21 and 26 or the curiously-rhythmic opening movement. Also on the positive side, the sound quality is very good and much like Volume II - nothing objectionable - and the cover art is exceptionally nice too. Fans of Angela Hewitt or the French Baroque should find more of a good thing here in Hewitt's third Couperin CD and much to celebrate in her delicate and tasteful pianism. Also her very useful accompanying notes to guide you along add to the attractiveness of this release. Maybe this last volume will grow on me with repeated listening, but so far I like Volume I the most with Volume II a close second. And continuing in her fine tradition of French Baroque keyboard gems, Angela Hewitt now turns her attention to the later music of Emmanuel Chabrier with a new CD released early in 2006.
