Synopsis
The second of two spinoffs launched by the hugely popular television series CSI: CRIME SCENE INVESTIGATION, CSI: NEW YORK distinguishes itself with an even darker, grittier tone than either of its predecessors by grounding the action in the gloomy aftermath of post-9/11 New York. The always brilliant Gary Sinise anchors the series as sternly professional former-Marine police detective Mac Taylor, whose stoic exterior masks the pain of losing his wife in the World Trade Center attacks. Taylor's forensics team includes his tough-as-nails partner, Stella Bonasera (Melina Kanakaredes); the sexy but street-smart investigator Aiden Burn (Vanessa Ferlito); no-nonsense tough guy Don Flack (Eddie Cahill); smart-aleck detective Danny Messer (Carmine Giovinazzo); and the briskly efficient coroner, Sheldon Hawkes (Hill Harper). Bathed in sombre, blue-tinged cinematography, the spinoff emphasizes well-drawn character development without sacrificing any of the grisly criminal and scientific elements that made its parent show such a smashing success. This collection presents every episode from the series' debut season.

5.0 out of 5 stars My new favourite TV show, 18 Feb 2008
By KM (England) - See all my reviews
(TOP 100 REVIEWER)
'CSI:NY' is the 3rd spin-off of the excellent CSI franchise and is set around the city of New York. This series is a lot more dark and grittier than it's Vegas and Miami counterparts, giving it a much more real and disturbing feel to it. Mac Taylor leads the team of CSI's played by the brilliant Gary Sinise, alongside Stella Bonasera (Melina Kanakaredes), Danny Messer (Carmine Giovinazzo), Aiden Burn (Vanessa Ferlito), medical examiner Dr. Sheldon Hawkes (Hill Harper) and Detective Don Flack (Eddie Cahill).

The thing I like the most about the NY series is the character interaction seems a lot more natural than it does in the Miami series and the earlier Vegas series. I actually felt like the characters know and care for one another and this all adds to the realism of the show. The excitement and action seems much more subtle yet realistic that the other 2 shows and the writers also throw a lot of background on the lead characters into the mix so that you begin to build up their characters fairly quickly and even start to care about them yourself as the episodes go on. There's a couple of things that let the show down (as well as the other 2 CSI shows) like the endless coincidences to lead to the killer, or the wire-thick hairs they find at the scenes, but I guess this is to stop the show lasting forever and stop it from getting boring.

Stand-out episodes for me were the season finale "What you see is what you see", which throws Taylor right into the middle of a murder with him being the lead witness; "Tanglewood" which is about some of the street gangs in New York and also reveals some more on Danny's background; "Creatures of the Night" where the whole of Central Park is the crime scene and also "Til Death do we Part" where the grooms at weddings are dropping dead at the alter for no apparent reason.

Overall this is an amazing start to a great new series and is possibly my favourite of the 3 CSIs now.I just love the characters, the locations and the investigations and definitely will be watching the next 2 series of this show very soon!

5.0 out of 5 stars The best of the bunch, 28 Aug 2008
By O. Doyle "celticshedevil" (Ireland) - See all my reviews
(TOP 100 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)

I never really got into the original CSI series and I've never been quite sure why. I think part of the reason is that the characters just didn't hit the right cords with me. I enjoyed watching bits of CSI Miami as I found the characters much more likeable but at the same time I could take it or leave it and wouldn't class myself as a `fan' as such. CSI New York on the other hand sucked me right in from the first episode I watched. I've always been a Gary Sinise fan but after snatching one or two episodes on tv I got straight on the internet and ordered CSI New York Seasons 1 and 2. I wasn't disappointed.

The characters in CSI New York all work together and form for me the perfect team. While they are portrayed as friends and colleagues it's done in such a way that it feels natural....unlike in CSI and CSI Miami where I felt the relationships were always a bit forced. Likewise the storylines in CSI New York range from subtle to outlandish but they all just seem to work together somehow.

All in all I think CSI New York is the best of the bunch and that's in no small part due to the starring of Gary Sinise as Mac Taylor. Pairing him with Melina Kanakaredes (Stella), Carmine Giovinazzo (Danny), Vanessa Ferlito (Aiden), Hill Harper (Sheldon Hawkes) and Eddie Cahill (Don Flack) didn't do the series any harm either.

4.0 out of 5 stars The best of the CSI franchises, 8 May 2006
By L. Williams "linds1972" (London, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I was a big fan of CSI: Crime Scene Investigations, but lost interest badly with CSI: Miami. With the arrival of CSI: New York, I'm hooked again.

The forensics sequences still drive me crazy (why is it that in every CSI show, the cigarette end found next to the victim ALWAYS* leads to the killer, never to some innocent bloke who just happened to have a smoke there half an hour before the murder?!), but this time round, we've got some real characters, rather than crime-solving robots. Gary Sinese is at his best since Apollo 13, and there is enough new talent here to keep us in films and TV for the next decade or so. The writers may slip in one too many corny lines now and then, as if they just can't hold themselves back, but much of the dialogue, particularly the "personal" bits, is spot-on.

So, minus a star for the annoying forensics stuff, but full-marks for the drama.

* except for one episode in Series 2 - keep 'em peeled!
