Synopsis

The Love Bug is back! Herbie (AKA No. 53), the sweet little '63 Volkswagen bug with a mind of his own and a serious love for speed, pairs with Lindsay Lohan in 'Herbie: Fully Loaded' for a sunny comedy. Maggie Peyton is a third generation member of a NASCAR racing family and dreams of winning from behind the wheel, but her protective dad Ray Peyton Sr. nixes the idea, while her brother Ray Jr. carries on the family legacy (even though he's not a very good driver). After graduating from college and securing a job at ESPN, Maggie has one month at home before leaving for New York City. When Ray Sr. offers her a car as a graduation gift, they visit a junkyard to pick out a used stock car and end up coming home with a thrilled Herbie. Maggie quickly discovers Herbie is more than just a regular car, and soon they're on their way to realising her dreams of racing glory while battling ego-inflated champ Trip Murphy (Matt Dillon) with the help of her cute mechanic friend Kevin. As Maggie, Lohan is spunky, determined, and adorable; young girls will love this inspirational character. Herbie himself is as winning as ever. The movie cleverly opens with highlights of Herbie's past exploits, going all the way back to his debut in 1969 in 'Herbie The Love Bug'. Older fans of the series will delight in seeing Herbie back in action, while the newly initiated will easily see what makes this car so special. NASCAR devotees should look for cameos from drivers Dale Earnhardt Jr., Jamie McMurray, Casey Mears, Kevin Harvick, and Rusty Wallace. Fun, exhilarating, and touching, 'Herbie: Fully Loaded' is the perfect family comedy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Kids will love it, 5 Nov 2005
By Mr. Steven J. Baynes (Birmingham, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I went to see this on holiday in america. As a 17 year old this wasn't my first choice of films to watch but i was with my young neices and nephews so i conceeded and saw this. I was sceptical at first but i soon got into the flow of the movie and had a great time (even though i wont admit it to my mates). Herbie was hilarious and the joy on the kids faces was brilliant to see. They had no previous knowledge of Herbie films but they fell in love with the car just as people did when the older films were released , it was a very good movie and Lindsay Lohan portrayed it brilliantly. I would reconmend it to anyone with children and anyone who was a previous fan of Herbie movies. Id also reconmend it to teenagers because Lindsay looks really good in greasy overalls!!!! well done disney

3.0 out of 5 stars Formulaic in the best tradition of Disney., 13 Mar 2007

(TOP 500 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
I don't know I have met anyone who claims that any of the Herbie movies were their favourite... they just seem to hold a kind of cosy communal memory of a certain era of Disney family movies.
This movie will certainly not change that - it is pretty derivative and formulaic. However, on the plus side, it is faithfully based on a formula which has been shown to work pretty well.
Herbie is a '63 Volkswagen Beetle, with a life and heart of its own. It's glory years apparently over (as seen through a montage of previous movies over the titles), Herbie is at the scrap heap when bought for tomboy racer Lindsay Lohan, by her father Michael Keaton. I'm not a Lohan fan, but the casting works rather well. She plays the woman in a man's world of racing quite convincingly, and Keaton hardly stretches himself but adds a little credibility to the movie just by being there. Matt Dillon plays the panto villain with ease. Justin Long plays the obligatory PG-friendly love interest.
The stunts and effects are everything you expect from a Herbie movie, with a dash of cgi effects thrown in for good measure. The cgi is used sparingly, keeping the flavour of the original movies, but where it is used it is done well. Best use has to be when Herbie `pulls a face' in Ted Avery style when Matt Dillon looks away. Slapstick moments are present and correct to keep the young `uns happy (oil in the face, hubcap in the shin, that sort of thing).
So what's it actually about? Not much - Lohan is at first unwillingly dragged back into racing with Herbie's help, only to realize it is her true calling, and of course convincing her dad along the way. In terms of tone, the slapstick is kept to the beginning of the movie, then towards the middle things get `serious', then we have Herbie's redemption at the end with some actually rather good racing scenes.
It won't break records for imagination, but it has faithfully kept to a winning formula, and as such passes muster. Kids should enjoy.

4.0 out of 5 stars Go Herbie!, 14 Sep 2005
Lindsay Lohan fans, beware! If you are looking for a film in a "Mean Girls" style, don't go for it. However, if you like Disney's well-known manner of creating family films, you've got the right title.
"Herbie: Fully Loaded" is a remake of the popular film serial from the '70s about Herbie, a car with a mind (and attitude!) of its own. However, he's at the junk yard, too old-fashioned to be driven. There he sees Maggie (Lindsay Lohan), a go-with-the-flow girl, who is looking for a cheap vehicle to buy. She buys Herbie, and when she finds out about the old car's desire to race, the fun begins!
This film is a candy for kids and adults alike. It's not as sterile as "Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen" (another Lindsay Lohan-Disney collaboration, and not a very succesful one), but it's not nearly as sassy as "Mean Girls", either! It's a movie about friendship, love... and how a VW beetle can be a regular Cinderella!
