Amazon.co.uk Review
Luc Besson wrote and directed the stylish thrillers La Femme Nikita and The Professional; though he didn't direct Unleashed, the script has his trademark fusion of outrageous sentimentality and over-the-top violence. Hong Kong action superstar Jet Li (Romeo Must Die, Hero) stars as Danny, a man raised to be a brutal attack dog by a nasty gangster named Bart (Bob Hoskins, Mona Lisa)--when Bart removes Danny's collar, Danny pulverizes everyone in the room. But a chance encounter with a blind piano tuner (Morgan Freeman, Million Dollar Baby) reveals to Danny the possibility of a less brutal life, and when a retaliation attack gives him the chance to escape, he does--but Bart won't let him go that easily. The fighting in Unleashed is effectively jolting; Li and fight choreographer Yuen Wo Ping (The Matrix) have purposefully stripped away the smoothness of most movie combat (especially with a genuine martial artist like Li) with raw, unnerving results, especially when juxtaposed with the sweet and earnest scenes of Li regaining his humanity with Freeman and his step-daughter (Kerry Condon). This freewheeling cocktail of bloody noses and ice-cream cones isn't for everyone, but fans of both Besson and Li will leave satisfied. --Bret Fetzer

Synopsis
Martial arts superstar Jet Li reteams with French writer-director Luc Besson (Kiss of the Dragon) in this psychological action film shot in Glasgow, Scotland. Li stars as Danny, a human attack dog for a powerful mobster he calls Uncle Bart (Bob Hoskins, looking resplendent in white suit after white suit). When Bart and his men go out on their collection runs, they bring Danny, who has been trained since he was a child to fight to kill. When Bart takes Danny's collar off and commands, 'Get 'im', Danny goes to work, an unstoppable machine, using the only weapon he knows: his body. But when a turf war ends up in bloody carnage, Danny escapes and is taken in by a kind family consisting of blind piano tuner Sam (Morgan Freeman) and his teenage stepdaughter, Victoria (Kerry Condon). They teach Danny how to be a real person, to be able to act civilly in society. They also allow Danny to explore his love of the piano, where a specific tune haunts him, bringing up repressed memories from his long-ago past. Just when Danny thinks he has escaped from his former life, he is pulled back in, but he is no longer the trained dog Bart thinks he is. Written by Besson and directed by Louis Letterier (The Transporter), Unleashed is a gripping, heart-wrenching film fuelled by the music of Massive Attack and a relentless visual style. And having taken acting lessons for the first time in his career, Li more than holds his own in the presence of such masters as Hoskins and Freeman.

5.0 out of 5 stars one of the Jet li's best movie ever, 20 Mar 2006
By Erica (London) - See all my reviews
Jet li is on top form, some the fight scenes are truly amazing, though jet plays the role of danny superbly as well. This is a must for any jet li / martial arts fan / action movie fan although the violence isnt mindless as there is a deep story behind this film "danny the dog".

A very good film with good morals.....please do watch it.

5.0 out of 5 stars not for the mindless, 10 April 2006

everyone told me to avoid this film like it was the plague - yet last night i sat down to watch something that i thought was going to be horrible and was pleasantly surprised. this is one of the best "acted" performances of jet li's career without a doubt. if you really want to see li finally used in a way that flexes both his power to impress his physical presence upon us combined with a tender, understaed ablity to actually act - the go no further than here. it really is worth it.
if all you want is non-stop action then don't bother ... simple as!
this is kung fu for an audience that can think!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great! If only there had been a little more action, though!, 10 Dec 2005

(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
Everyone knows Jet Li is an astonishing master of various styles of kung fu but in trying to get in to the Hollywood main stream he has had to accept a number of bad roles - Romeo Must Die, The One, Cradle 2 The Grave? All horrible, and in all but the middle of those 3 Jet Li is giving a supporting role under the black gangster heroes (DMX should never have been put on the big screen) who its hard to get interested in. In Unleashed, which I first saw in San Francisco (also known as 'Danny the Dog') he finally gets a role where he can do some acting - and he's not bad as it turns out. The naive, scared and wounded hero seems perfect for Jet Li with his broken English and he is amazingly suited to it, even though he is pushing 50. The supporting performances from Bob Hoskins as the manipulative and ruthless villain and Morgan Freeman as the wise, blind pianist (who manages to 'see' the real Danny underneath the brutal attack dog) are exemplary.

Of course most people watch Jet Li films for the action and this does not disappoint - it opens with an incredibly energetic fight scene showing how well trained 'Danny' is and when ordered to attack by his master, well the sparks really fly. The pit fights later on are pretty good but the climax is somewhat disappointing as there is only the one master for him to get his teeth in to, martial artist Michael Lambert.

For those who are looking just to see what Jet Li could do, I would recommend The Last Hero in China, which often sells very cheaply or one of the 'Once Upon a time in China' series - if on the other hand you're wanting to see an action movie backed up by quality acting (and actors!), a solid plot-driven story, then you wont be disappointed as there are few better ones than this.
