Amazon.co.uk Review
Based on the novella by Steve Martin (who also pens the screenplay), Shopgirl centres on Mirabelle Buttersfield (played by Claire Danes), a lonely young woman working in the glove department of a vast department store. Working by day and occasionally spending time on her art at night, Mirabelle craves company, and that leads her to accept an offer of a date from Jeremy, a manic and slob-like character, and not one who’s instantly particularly likeable. And then the very wealthy Ray Porter (Martin) comes on the scene. He too asks Mirabelle out, and the rest of the film follows her relationship with the two men who are effectively fighting for her affections.

In lesser hands, Shopgirl could easily sink under a wave of clichés, yet Martin’s script never lets that happen. Mixing in a gamut of emotions, and charting the highs and lows of romance, there’s a searing honesty to it all that makes the film hard to resist. Martin and Danes both give excellent performances too, although Jason Schwartzman as Jeremy does have a tendency to overcook his part in what’s primarily a quiet, diligent film. Yet without resorting to big grandstand moments or contrived situations, Shopgirl manages, with little fuss, to tell an intriguing story in a very warm manner.--Simon Brew

Synopsis
In adapting his popular novella to the big screen, Steve Martin chooses director Anand Tucker (HILARY AND JACKIE), whose artful eye (along with the film's stunning costumes, dramatic score, and brilliant set design) brings the book's detailed characters beautifully to life. Recalling her breakout role of analytical Angela Chase on MY SO-CALLED LIFE, a luminously brunette Claire Danes plays Mirabelle Buttersfield, a serious young woman (and aspiring artist) from Vermont who has moved to Los Angeles with hopes that, out on the West Coast, her life will finally begin. But Mirabelle's job at the rarely visited glove department of Saks Fifth Avenue and her naturally reserved demeanour make it hard for her to find genuine connections in a place as isolating as L.A. It's with a mixture of her need for human interaction and her lowered expectations that Mirabelle reluctantly accepts the awkward advances of Jeremy (Jason Schwartzman), a clueless but kind slob she meets at a Laundromat. The opposite of romantic, Jeremy's initial attempts at wooing hardly cure Mirabelle of her loneliness, so when wealthy older man Ray Porter (Martin) asks Mirabelle out with grace and style, she agrees. What follows is a touching look at the disappointment, confusion, and heartbreak that accompanies unreciprocated love, with Martin's script showing particular insight into the experiences of its young female protagonist. In the end, the couple's age difference is of little importance, as the film's main intention is give Mirabelle some omniscient guidance (via Martin's voiceovers) in a time of growth. Through it all, she (like the film) counters reality with the knowledge (and hope) that true love can change everything. While chemically prone to depression, Mirabelle is also a dreamer, with the strong belief that things could be truly wonderful, if only they'd fall into place.

3.0 out of 5 stars More interesting than your average rom-com. , 25 Jul 2007
By flingthecow (Magic Land) - See all my reviews
I think this film may have slight delusions of grandeur, but it's still nice to watch. The characters are well-played, and it's nice to see personalities that aren't Hollywood perfect and 'normal'. Jason Swartzman is very funny, and lends the film a bit of the 'indie' spirit and weirdness I think it's going for. The voiceover by Martin though is trite and annoying, and almost ruined the ending for me, so maybe try to ignore it.
The central message, being the importance of true love, isn't original exactly, but sometimes it's nice to be reminded of these things.
It's worth watching. :)

5.0 out of 5 stars "Searing honesty" is right..., 16 Sep 2006
By S. Butler (Perth) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
An incredible movie -its strengths come from the simple honesty with which the story was told. I think this simplicity has perhaps been misunderstood by some of those rating it poorly. Yes, there is so little of the usual hollywood signposting that sometimes you wonder about the background of the characters or other details, but taken for what it is -a story of two very different relationships experienced by the central character, it is incredibly moving. The emotional experience of the viewer following this story is only heightened by the straight-forward and honest presentation of Mirabelles relationships in contrast to so many films which distance the viewer with excessive sentiment and unreal romanticism. But despite the reality, expect a gentle ride due to the beautiful cinematography, set & costume design.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent film true to original Book, 16 Jul 2006

I read the book written by Steve Martin in 2002 and found it to be very good, i was worried that the film adaptation may not be true to the book, but it was , Steve Martin is excellent playing one of his own characters and Claire Danes makes an excellent Mirabelle with the insecurity and vulnerability of the original character, her young boyfriend is excellent too. It is very well filmed, a really good film !
