Amazon.co.uk Review
A spin-off rather than a sequel, Band Camp is the fourth entry in the American Pie franchise, but the first without the original cast. Instead a new trash-talking teen takes the lead. His name is Matt (Tad Hilgenbrinck) and he's Steve Stifler's younger brother (and despite the dark hair, Hilgenbrinck does resemble Seann William Scott--without the impish charm). There's nothing the football playing party boy hates more than bandies, the geeky members of the high school band. After he gets caught "punking" his favourite victims, he's sent to the guidance counselor, a redheaded gent known as the Sherminator (Chris Owen), who recommends band camp as penance. Since Steve has moved on to become a Girls Gone Wild impresario, Matt decides he'll make his own R-rated opus, "Bandies Gone Wild." This means spying on the well endowed camp counselors and other unwitting campers while they're showering, sunbathing, etc. When the not-so-bright triangle player gets caught yet again, his new friends abandon him, leading Stiffmeister Jr. to believe he just may have gone too far. Band Camp, which was released straight to DVD, plays more like Porky's than American Pie, and features Eugene Levy as Mr. Levenstein, AKA "Jim's Dad," the camp's conflict resolution officer and ex-porn star Ginger Lynn Allen as the camp nurse. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

2.0 out of 5 stars Stale Pie, 19 Jul 2006
By Tim Bentley (Shetland, UK) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
Well most of the seriously funny franchises slowly degenerate until they're but pigmys walking in the shadows of giants - take a look at National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation II, need I say more. American Pie Presents Band Camp unfortunately is no exception. Like all of the weaker siblings this too maintains a character or so from the originally success, the hilarius Eugene Levy reprising his role as Jim's Dad, this time he's a camp counsellor (I wonder what happened to Jim's Mom?) and of course Stifler's little brother.

The idea seems to be sound although the majority of the Band Camp gags seem to have been played out in full in American Pie 1 & 2.

Poor on the whole with the odd flash of high comedy, and on the whole pretty forgettable. As one or two of the other reviewers have demonstrated it will probably appeal to the younger more adolescent audience for its girls and basic humour.

Not a slice of pie that I'll bother to keep, so second hand shop here I come.

2.0 out of 5 stars Don't expect much, 6 Nov 2005
Don't listen to the previous reviewer, they clearly haven't seen the movie, or have certainly done a bad job of remembering it if they have. The two returning cast members are Eugene Levy (Jim's Dad) and Chris Owen who plays Chuck Sherman AKA The Shermanator, but his role is pretty minor. The character Paul Finch does not feature at all.

First off, if you're thinking that this is American Pie 4, don't. This movie is a cheap spin-off designed to cash in on a tried and tested idea. The plot is weak and boring and the jokes, which are mostly copied from the 3 previous films are all very samey and dull.

Tad Hilgenbrinck, who plays the movie's central character - Steve Stiffler's younger brother Matt does a reasonable job of imitating the original Stiffler traits but the rest of the cast are very weak and uninteresting.

So, 'Band Camp' is vaguely likeable and fun. But would have undoublably been a flop if it had been released as a movie in it's own right, without a history and without the American Pie name associated with it. Regardless of whether they are standalone or part of a series all movies need to carry their own weight and this one doesn't.

I'm imaging that like me, most American Pie fans will be curious to see this film even if they're not expececting much from it. So, I'd advise auditioning it before paying for your own copy. Trust me, you'll understand why once you've seen it!

3.0 out of 5 stars Watchable... But not the same!, 2 Nov 2005
After watching the past 3 installments of American Pie, it was a shame to see that they could not bring out a 4th that was worthy of a cinema screening! Unless i missed it...

But the plot is based on Stiflers younger brother Matt, who is aspiring to be like his older brother by making adult movies. Unfortunatly his antics plunge him into the school councillors office where the councillor is played by an old cast member "Shermminator", in which he sends Matt off to band camp as punishment.

Making the most of his oppertunity, Matt arrives at Band camp to the dislike of the rest of his band members and sets up a string of hidden cameras to catch all the so called "action" that takes place after the lights go out! But distractions happen when he bumps into an old high school flame... and the plot takes the ever obvious path of love, hate and a happy ending with some comical happenings in between! Jim's Dad also makes an apperance as the Band camp macro (regulator).

In the end, worth seeing if you have watched the others, but it will never be the same without the original cast!
