Synopsis

Full of pride, Cassiopeia compares her daughter's beauty to that of Hera. Angered, the queen of the gods has Poseidon unleash the monstrous beast Craken to destroy their village unless Cassiopeia's daughter, Andromeda, is sacrificed. Perseus, the son of Zeus, becomes enchanted with the breathtaking beauty and is determined to save her from this fate. The young hero, armed with a magical shield, a winged stallion and a mechanical owl, discovers the only way to defeat the monster is with the head of Medusa. The gods watch and intervene on Perseus' quest to save his beloved. This was legendary special effects wizard Ray Harryhausen's last film before he retired from creating movie magic. L.A. LAW's Harry Hamlin stars as the Greek mythological hero Perseus who fights snake-haired Medusa and two-headed dogs to save the lovely Andromeda (Judi Bowker). Laurence Olivier, as Zeus, is one of the many screen legends in this adventure. Burgess Meredith, Claire Bloom, Maggie Smith and Ursula Andress round out the cast as the Gods of Mount Olympus. Director Desmond Davis was camera operator on TOM JONES and A TASTE OF HONEY, two influential early 1960s British films. Writer Beverly Cross was one of the writers on 1963's Ray Harryhausen film, JASON AND THE ARGONAUTS.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Oldie but still a Goodie, 3 May 2006
I hate it when people moan on how out of date this brillant film is, how the moan on about how bad the visuals are, but with out this film and many other of Ray's film effects we would not have the likes of Peter Jacksons "King Kong" today.
Look at the films good points, good story, brillant actors, fanatastic monsters.
This film is a classic and should be respected as one.
Show it your children and let then marvel in a hey day of exellent films made to keep you on the edge of your seat as a child.
One of my all time greats and a treasured memory too.

5.0 out of 5 stars "Find and fulfill your destiny.", 26 Dec 2005

You can not go wrong with this movie. Of course the first thing that is of notice is the great Ray Harryhausen's stop-motion effects the Kraken and Medusa are unique. I have several other movies with his work.
Better actors could not be cast in the various roles; I have to mention a few, however this does not detract from the other performers. Maggie Smith is recognized from many BBC productions and fits the part of Thetis. Judi Bowker as Andromeda has to play a range of emotions and is beautiful enough to be a princess. Of course everyone recognizes Burgess Merideth; I remember him best as Commander Egan Powell, Intelligence Officer, in
"In Harm's Way" (1965). Who could show the authority that Zeus wields better than Laurence Olivier does.

Titans were around before Zeus's crowd so many people are not aware of their story.

This basic story is that the only daughter of Acrisius has given birth to a child out of wedlock and for this she must die. Danae and her young son, Perseus are placed in a wooden coffin and set adrift with the intent that the Sea will do the deed. Naturally as with all Greek plays this is spotted in time by Zeus who sets them safely on a foreign shore. This is the start of a cat and mouse power struggle among the gods and involves mankind with a beautiful Princess Andromeda, an amiable playwright Ammon, and many mythical creatures from the classics.

3.0 out of 5 stars Outdated,but still a classic, 20 Feb 2006

Ok the effects in the film are outdated, but at the time where classic. I remember seeing this film at the cinema when i was a kid and it is definately still watchable. Yes some of the acting and lines are cheesy and corny, but its a classic telling of a classic greek mythological tale. This is definately worth buying, if only to entertain the kids, which im sure it will do!
