This is a highly understated comedy film. It has to be one of the funniest comedies I have seen, taking a humorous view of life in the 'hood' it is a spoof of the dramas such as 'Boys in the hood' and you may find it to be similar to the 'Friday' series starring Ice Cube (but funnier!). The famously funny Wayans brothers star in this film as Ash Tray and Loc Dog, both trying to work their way out of the hood. But whilst doing this they come across many extraordinary characters, 'Toothpick' a hardened regular jail goer (who is confused about his sexuality), Grandma who rides in LoLo's, breakdances and fights with Ash Tray, and also a women with seven kids. Overall a very silly film, which is very funny, but funnier if you have seen the films it is making a spoof of.

I think you have to be in to the Wynan's family genre of comdey (see In Living Colour)to appreciate this. This was painful to watch ! It had a couple of funny gags that they linked together to make a movie. The only time it got interesting was trying to guess the original movie scenes they were a pastiche of. But then again times change and this probably was a riot when it came out.

The Wayans Brothers movies are usually hit or miss, from the good (Scary Movie) to the bad (Little Man), however Don't Be A Menace is one of the best films they've done. It's basically a spoof of hood movies like Boyz n the Hood, South Central and Menace II Society, making fun of drive by shootings, drugs, drinking, teenage pregnancy, pimped out cars and suspicious asian shopkeepers, as well as a bunch of crazy characters.
