5.0 out of 5 stars A very good Paris Opera version, set in 1942, 7 Mar 2008
By KazM (London) - See all my reviews
Recorded in 2004, this production by the Paris Opera is set in France in 1942 instead of 1775 in the original. It was the year when this fifteenth and final opera by Richard Strauss was premiered in Munich. The setting works well except when Goldoni and Gluck are mentioned as contemporary composers. The stage sets and costumes are very handsome. The large stage of Opera National de Paris suits this production well.

As the Countess, Renee Fleming sings the music of melodic beauty gloriously. Both Gerald Finley (the poet) and Rainer Trost (the composer) who pursue her, each advocating their own art as the most important art form - Words first or music first? - sing ardently for their respective cause. La Roche, the humorously overbearing theatrical director, is performed by Franz Hawlata.

This intimate "conversation piece for music" has no traditional arias, unlike usual operas. The continuously melodic conversational recitative is a delight and is often humorous. I just wish I could understand German. This work would be more enjoyable if I could undestand the witty libretto in the original language, written by the composer and Clemens Kraus, a famous Austrian conductor and interpreter of Strauss's music.

The conducting by Ulf Schirmer is very good. Both the picture and sound quality are excellent.
