Glorious Grigorovich-Perfect Prokofiev, 28 Sep 2009
For a change lets start with the bad points or downside to this Ballet-There are NONE!now that's out of the way lets get on with the good bits.
The music of Sergei Prokofiev is as always very very good,I could easily sit back and listen to the sound track, but think what I would be missing. This version is choreographed by Yuri Grigorovich (ably assisted by Natalia Bessmertnova and Valery Ryjov)and what a team they obviously are.The first time I watched this Dvd I didn't even notice the subtle changes made to the set in full view of the audience and as such,us the viewer.
I found the sets to be just right for the Play, dark enough for the inside of Ivan's Palace, without being to dark for us to see all that is going on.
So onto the players/dancers-Ivan is portrayed by Nicolas Le Riche, and what a dancer and actor he is,his face alone is perfect for the part with deep set eyes and an unblinking stare.Believe me this man could leap over the Moon if he wished, yet his timing is perfect, was Ivan really Terrible who knows.
Kurbsky danced by Karl Paquette is as such the leader of the Boyars, but does not seem arrogant enough to me,but is of his own right a great dancer(you can also see him as Inigo, leader of the Gypsies in Paquita) as you will see.
Anastasia is danced beautifully by ELEONORA ABBAGNATO,her part is obviously a central one to the theme of this story as Ivan's first and only love, poisoned by the Boyars her death in fact leading to Ivan's witch hunt and the inevitable death of all of them in revenge by Ivan now in truth the first TSAR of all Russia. In my opinion part fourteen where while in mourning Ivan thinks he sees and dances with his Anastasia is a highlight among many to be seen in this ballet.
You may also notice that part sixteen starts with what is a thinly disgised part of "God preserve the Tsar"or is that just in my mind...
You will thus notice that I have not told much of the storyline,to know that you'll just have to buy the Dvd.Should you buy it,Oh YES,first class music, dance and sets, great costumes,Worthy of much more than five stars, get it-you'll not regret it...

unforgettable Ivan, 16 Feb 2009
Since Vasiliev and Mukhamedov ,each of them creating unforgettable Ivans,no dancer had so powerfully portrayed on stage the character of Czar Ivan IV,the Terrible .
Now the Opera National de Paris offers a formidable performance of Grigorovch's Ivan ,recorded live in 2003,Vello Pähn conducting Prokofiev's great music, composed as film score for Eisenstein's 1942-44 masterpiece. Grigorovich had choreographed it,in his vigorous style,in 1975, for the Bolshoi and his wife Natalia Bessmertnova, recently deceased, who had danced Anastasia with Mukhamedov ,helped as assistant choreographer,in this Paris production.
Nicholas Le Riche gives an impressive, electrifying Ivan ,his prodigious "jetés" memorable, his presence as an actor extremely convincing, performing with great technique this 17 year-old sombre, cruel and tormented Ivan. The world had taken notice of him in 1993,dancing Auber's Pas de Quatre with Elisabeth Platel,in Tokio,as Nina Ananiashvili's guest.Since then,as "étoile" of the BNP,he has become the epitome of the great dancer, along with Manuel Legris. On DVD,one can watch him in Balanchines'Jewels,Neumeier's Sylvia, and Albrecht in Giselle ,appeared now.
His beloved Anastasia is young and beautiful Eleonora Abbagnato who convinces with her subtle, moving dancing.
Karl Paquette, already seen in Lacotte's revised Paquita(2003) and Nureyev's Swan Lake(2006),is an intense, fiercing Kurbsky, more than deserves to become an "étoile".
This luxurious production ,beautifully filmed,is a must.

ivan the Terrible, 22 May 2009
Beautifully danced by mostly French dancers and well filmed. This terrifying monarch comes across in a reasonably acceptable way and Prokofiev's music is much more enjoyable than the subject matter would have led you to expect.
