4.0 out of 5 stars More good Handel from Curtis, 30 Nov 2008
By Iain C. Davidson "iain1825" (Scotland) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This is the earlier version (largely) of Handel's opera from 1720. Nicholas McGegan had already recorded the revised version (for when the great castrato Senesino took over the title role) following live performances at the Gottingen Festival. Curtis' recording has a slightly starrier cast including Joyce Didonato in the title role, sung originally by Handel stalwart Margherita Durastanti. She sings it very well and is preferable to the hooty Ralf Popken for McGegan. The hero's wife Zenobia is also very stylishly sung by Maite Beaumont and there are excellent performances also from Patrizia Ciofi, Dominique Labelle and Laura Cherici. Zachary Stains sings the tyrant Tiridate with a light, even tenor but doesn't really convince dramatically as a villain (a man who covets his brother-in-law's wife). Curtis is, as ever, reliable and thankfully does not subject the score to many cuts. There are only a couple of changes to the original arias - both wisely chosen in my opinion. In short, there are good things about both versions and so both recordings are worth having if possible.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great stuff!, 27 Dec 2008
By spalanzane (North Wales) - See all my reviews
Handel's Radamisto is an early work, and one that is really worth giving a listen to. I wasn't really a fan of Handelian opera until fairly recently, so cannot pretend to offer any comparisons or insights, but what I can do is say how much I enjoyed this opera. There are plenty of poignant, reflective and gorgeous arias for the company to relish, as well as one or two more robust pieces. Two particularly stand out for me, both in quite near succession at the beginning of act one. "Stragi, morti" sung fearlessly Zachary Stains (the aria is likened to a concerto for the voice, and it is amazing to hear a tenor cope with coloratura that is usually dished out for sopranos to sing), and the second is "Son contenta di morire", a frenetic, driving and amazing aria sung by Maite Beaumont. For these two arias alone, the box set was most assuredly worth it!!
