This is a joyful recording and fizzes along with just the right touch under Pritchard's baton. The cast are a great team and this feels like a proper performance. The chorus provide "background" laughter and even applause after some big numbers which not everyone will like. I presume to give the flavour of a live performance. I rather like it myself - it all adds to the high spirits.

Wixell and Evans are in fine fettle and it's great to have one of the latter's signature roles preserved. Domingo is in his most honey-voiced youthful prime, and sounds every inch the country bumpkin, despite the heroic Otello - like tone. He could have varied dynamics more - there's little pianissimo here and Una Furtiva Lagrima is rather straightforwardly sung. But there are no mannersims with Domingo and compared to other tenors in this music that's a relief.

Cotrubas shakes off her cloak of tragedy (Violetta, Gilda etc) and proves herself a sparkling comedienne. Her's is a very individual voice with a surprising timbre. Yet I defy anyone to resist as she twirls and dances through the opera with wit, charm and superb musicianship.
