4.0 out of 5 stars Transitional Seventies Barry, 20 Jan 2006
By A Customer
With another version of King Kong recently released (2005), the less than satisfactory film that went with this John Barry score will probably be settling into the silt next to Raise the Titanic. Thankfully, such is not the case with this music which is clearly better than the film it accompanies.

In the mid-1970s, John Barry's work was undergoing an interesting transition from the highly unusual innovations of his Sixties scores to the larger string-driven sound which most people now recognise as quintessentially Barry. For this reason, King Kong is definitely worth a listen.

The composer has said he always aims to capture the emotional centre of the action rather than just describe it, and this he does very well for King Kong. Undeterred by second-rate special effects, Barry's music conveys real unease about journeying into the unknown, real menace at the size and ferocity of the creature, real mystery about Kong's strange island environment, and real feeling in its scenes with Dwan (Jessica Lange). My only complaint as such is that this remastered disk still omits one or two pieces of haunting Barryola which might have been included.

It’s a curious piece of work, not up there with other stronger Barry scores of the Seventies (Diamonds Are Forever, Robin and Marian), but still too good to ignore. And it certainly remains head and shoulders above so much else that passes for modern film music.

4.0 out of 5 stars Impressive, 18 Sep 2009
By Neil B ""HI-NRG FAN"" (Manchester, UK) - See all my reviews
There are many film scores that lie forgetten in the dusty vaults, and luckily, this is one that got away! I have the original film score on vinyl LP. This CD release is a long awaited treat, especially for fans of John Barry. Even though the actual film is rather "dubious", The actual music rises above this and is both thrilling and exciting. A rich, luscious soundtrack, and well worthy of this CD release.
