Fantastic collection!, 24 Oct 2005

I haven't played the video game yet, but this is one soundtrack that stands on its own as a complete, integrated listening experience. The album consists of a well-selected bunch of covers of oldies, done by alternative and indie bands, and none of the tracks are available elsewhere, except for the Raveonettes track, which is on their latest album. So, it's a bunch of rarities for collectors and hardcore fans of the bands, right? Well, yes, but it's more than that. Death Cab's version of Earth Angel is as heartbreaking and fragile as anything on Plans, The Flaming Lips' take on If I Only Had a Brain (from The Wizard of Oz), is wonderfully hyperactive and bizarre, Ben Kweller's version of Lollipop is wonderfully sweet, etc. etc. etc. In short, every track on this album is great. If you love pop--classic oldies pop all the way to current indie pop, then this album is for you.
