5.0 out of 5 stars Right Choice, 28 Jan 2006
By Grehad (England) - See all my reviews
I did a LOT of research and narrowed it down to Ricoh GRD, Panasonic DMC-LX and Canon S80. Did the usual and went into high street stores to gleen as much info as possible from dedicated camera shops. I wanted to buy S80 as I have got Canon SLR and it is excellent. So, I was glad that advice from experts was to go with S80.

Since having it I have not regretted the choice. It is so easy to use and pictures are excellent. 2.5" LCD screen enables you to get a good idea of pics out in the field (however, they are always a lot better when viewed on computer or printed out).

The wide angle lens is fantastic. This cannot be underestimated when taking close up shots. Lets face it, the majority of our shots are taken from about 6-20 feet away. You can get so much more into shot with this lens. Most competitor cameras have an equivalent 35mm focal length of 36mm, S80 has 28mm. This is an amazing advantage, go see it and compare the difference.

Also, I have used the stitch facility which is fantastic. You can take a series of pictures and stitch them together to get a seemless (well virtually) panoramic view. Stitching together 6 shots enabled me to get a 360 degree view of my lounge onto one picture.

One gripe, there is no battery life indicator. A minor point but it did annoy me when I went out for the day and only managed to take 6 pics before the battery ran out.

The camera is quite expensive but it is in a different league to its competitors. If you buy a lesser model you will regret it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Quality, 20 Dec 2005
Being a first time digital camera buyer I was looking for a high quality compact. After doing as little research I narrowed my choice between the Nikon Coolpix P1 and Canon powershot S80, both 8 megapixel cameras. The reviews I read favoured the Canon. Having a canon pixma printer I decided to keep it in the family and go for the powershot s80. I was not dissapointed with my choice. The picture quality is superb, providing crisp natural images with amazing clarity. It works beautifully with the pixma printer. As well as finding it easy to use as a first time digital camera user, it is also very well built with a lovely slick black and chrome design. It operates very quickly so you can capture them unexpected picture moments in a couple of seconds. The LCD screen is a good size and there are enough funtions and settings to keep experienced photgraphers occupied.

So overall: Quality Picture results and quality design. It sells at over £400 on the high street, so buying it at the price on amazon makes it feel like a bargain for what is a high end compact digital camera.

5.0 out of 5 stars Super smashing great!, 1 Jan 2006
By Judy A. Greenfield "Jude" (Oxford) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I have always been a fan of photography and persued the hobby ernestly when I got my first SLR for my 18th. But after many failed shots and a rather vague understanding I gave up. It was too expensive and time consuming to get a whole film developed to only get 4 or 5 good shots.
My passion for photography has been renewed again by the Canon S80. If I just want to point and shoot I can use the auto mode and the camera will set all the settings for me. Or I can use one of the preset modes for indoor, outdoor, snow, beach (i wish!) settings etc. Great photos, amazing quality and dead easy.
But, if I do want to get a bit more technical, I can adjust settings and see the effect on the screen straight away. No more scribbling the settings and the shot number in a little book and waiting for the results to be processed at the chemist. The results are right there in front of me! I have learned so much in the few short weeks of having this camera. I am even getting my old SLR out again and getting much better results.
This is a great camera for those who want to get a bit more technical. I dont think I would spend the money on it unless I was going to use the extra settings. If it is a point and shoot that you are after then this may not be the camera for you. But if you want a point and shoot with the added ability of getting a bit more technical then BUY IT! I love it.
