5.0 out of 5 stars Unique, 20 Jan 2006
By J. J. Blackburn "captainjjb" (Rochdale, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
A unique experience. No-one had ever put together a touring band like this before 1979, and nothing quite like it has been done since. I remember seeing the last concert in Manchester and it had a huge influence on me at the time. It is amazing to watch the gig again so many years later and marvel at the music and musicianship shown here.

The whole DVD is worth purchasing just to watch the late Pierre Moerlen bashing the vibraphone during Part 4 of Incantations.

Bearing in mind these were MO’s first real gigs (under his own name) he appears very relaxed, and his playing is top notch. My favourite piece is on the first DVD, Incantations. I have always loved this piece and consider it his best work.

Most people will however enjoy the rockier version of Tubular Bells on the second DVD, with its comedic moments and superb variations on the original themes.

I had completely forgotten about the paper planes which are thrown by audience and group throughout the second half. I remember thinking it was quite bizarre at the time, and all these years later it still seems very odd. I guess Mike was trying to counter the rather static nature of the audience during Incantations (it’s not a piece to bop to) and get them moving a bit for the rock’n’roll version of Tubular Bells.
I enjoy the split angled view best. This is the first DVD I’ve got where I will actually use this facility.

On the negative side? Well, only the audience. Did we really look that bad back in 1979? It makes me feel very very old indeed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful - a great 70's time capsule, 30 Nov 2005
By M. Riley "mkr1966" (UK) - See all my reviews

Exposed is one of my favourite Mike Oldfield CD's so I didn't hesitate to get this, and I was not disappointed. It's clear that everyone on stage is enjoying themselves, and this comes across in the music, which sounds fresh and exciting. Incantations is a magical piece but the revelation is Tubular Bells; maybe Mike was tired of playing it over and over and so turned it into this fantastic blues jam, giving the piece a whole new lease of life.

The multi angle option is an inspired idea - you can direct the visuals yourself - and the intermission is a treat, where a paper plane fight breaks out between the audience and the band. I highly recommend this DVD to anyone who likes Mike's music.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fascinating treat, 25 Nov 2005
More than anything, this dvd release is fascinating. Mike Oldfield wasn't particularly renowned for public appearances in the 70s, so this is certainly a gem to have in your collection, if you're a fan of Mike's. I agree with other reviewers who say that the whole thing has a very 70s feel. Incantations is the better of the three pieces performed on the dvd, although the version of Tubular Bells is very intersting. The interviews with members of the orchestra at the start are good. Considering Mike was a star and rich at this point in time, he didn't go overboard in hiring luxury coaches for the musicians to travel to the venue in! I like how the sound and visuals are not flashy and full on. It's very honest and it allows you to concentrate on the music, which is excellent throughout. Incantations is one of Mike's most underrated works, frequently overshadowed by Tubular Bells 1 and 2 and Ommadawn. It's breathtakingly beautiful and Maddy Prior's vocals on the Hiawatha section send shivers down the spine. I think this dvd requires repeated viewings to really get the best out of what it has to offer. The incredible thing is that Mike was only 26 when this concert took place and he'd already recorded three albums and collaborated with people like David Bedford. Clearly a frighteningly talented man.
