Product Description

Manufacturer's Description

If you want a high quality camera that offers amazing 10x optical zoom power, this is the camera for you. With its large 6.4cm LCD and 6 million pixels, the SP-500 lets ambitious photographers frame and shoot creative images with ease. A predictive auto focus and a movie recording function with sound expand your creative options even further.

Get to the heart of the action with the Olympus SP-500 digital camera. With its user friendly, professionally formed body combined with a large range of advanced features; this is the perfect camera to take on action packed holidays or for use at live sporting events.

The SP-500 offers photographers the power and flexibility of a precision 10x optical zoom lens system for taking quality shots from a distance. Matched with 6.0 million pixels, the camera guarantees high-definition images every time.

For more ambitious photographers, this camera offers Aperture and Shutter Priority shooting as well as the option of full manual exposure control. Light distribution can also be checked by using the histogram function accessible in both shooting and playback modes, giving photographers ample room for creativity and experimentation.

With its bright (1:2.8-3.7) 10x optical zoom that covers a 38-380mm focal range (35mm camera equivalent), the SP-500 allows subjects to be picked out and captured up close. Even greater zoom power is available by using the optional TCON-17* tele converter, which extends magnification by a factor of 1.7x for a maximum focal length of 646mm (35mm camera equivalent). The camera's wide angle capabilities can also be boosted with the WCON-07* enabling stunning 27mm views (35mm equivalent). For extreme close-ups photographers can shoot in Super Macro mode from as little as 3cm away.

A variety of focusing options, from iESP autofocus through to spot and multi-spot AF and manual focus, allow photographers to dictate the level of control they require. As with the EISA Award-winning Olympus C-7070 Wide Zoom, the SP-500 incorporates a Predictive AF system, which predicts the location of a moving subject at the moment the shutter closes. This is especially useful when photographing subjects such as wildlife. The compact Olympus SP-500 is the perfect choice for the more ambitious photographer.;* Usage requires CLA-4 adapter ring.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent for a beginner who wants to experiment a bit, 2 Mar 2006
I received this camera at Christmas, and I am completely new to digital photography. I wanted something that would allow me to develop new skills, but without having to know to much about the technical side of photography.

This camera is excellent for that. I started with the auto setting and found this gave good results, but found some photos a little dark so I moved onto custom settings, which I found quite easy to use. There are four custom settings and a SCENE setting which has about 15 pre-programmed settings for things like behind glass, cuisine, sport etc, which are really useful. This camera if definitely user friendly for the beginner who wants really high detail images. The macro setting is amazing and produces really clear, sharp results. The LCD screen is also good because its so large, so you can view your pictures in good detail before you upload them to a computer. The camera can also record videos, which I haven't really experimented with yet.

The only problem I have had so far is that it can take a while to focus on an object, often up to a second after you press the button. I have tried to find other ways of focussing but as yet have not found any. I would say if you want a camera that can focus and take a picture really fast then this may not be the best one for you.

Overall, I would say this is an easy to use and non-threatening camera, not too difficult for a beginner to use but also good quality enough for those more experienced. I had some prints done yesterday and the colours are amazing, without any editing, and the focus is sharp, even very close up. I'd definitely recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars excellent bit if kit, 29 May 2006
By Gavin Lindsay "BFG" (Leighton Buzzard, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I worked as a wedding photographer for a number of years then gave it up. All my analogue kit was Olympus and U swore by it. I was recently asked to 'do' a wedding for a relative and they wanted digital which necessitated buying a camera. I instinctively went and looked at Olympus. I never liked carrying large cameras around and I only ever used to use my analogue kit on jobs. For my own photos I used an AF compact so I wasn't in the market for a digital SLR. I needed something' however that afforded me some creative control over the images I wanted to take. The SP500 ticked all the boxes for me. It is fully featured and small enough not to be a pain. I would recommend this camera to anyone looking for that something more than a point and shoot.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous piece of Kit!, 23 Jun 2006
By J. Cooper (Oxfordshire, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Having only received the Camera a couple of days before I went on a few days Holiday to Cornwall, I was expecting a 'hit & miss' start to my usage of the SP500. This is my first real big megapixels and Zoom camera. So I just left the Camera on Auto and just clicked. It was simplicity itself! As I took more pictures it became very intuitive and I was soon playing with the various settings; and there are loads to choose from, taking pictures was becoming real fun. The camera behaved impeccably.

I'm home now and have downloaded all my pictures, over 200, onto my PC,(I purchased a Olympus 512MB XD Card at the same time) which was hassle free, very simple and quick to do. Again I was expecting to see quite a few blurred or badly lit shots (I was taking shots of everything, from sunsets and Surfers, to portraits, close ups and landscapes, in varying light conditions), incredibly every single shot I took has come out pin sharp, picking up detail I did'nt even see, and the colours are superb. Even when I used the Zoom to it's fullest, taking a shot of nesting birds on a cliff face, I was expecting the shot to show some blurring from camera shake, but not a bit of it, it came out great! Apart from a few images that need cropping and straightening (user error, not camera!) I have a fabulous selection of holiday shots.

I cannot rate this Camera highly enough, a magnificent choice for any user irrespective of experience. Well done Olympus, a fabulous digital camera, and well done Amazon for selling it at such an amazing low price, and for the usual faultless delivery service.
