Amazon.co.uk Review

Bundling together the first two series of the smash hit BBC series, this double pack of Little Britain: Series 1 & 2 is an economical and entertainment-packed way to catch up with one of the comedy phenomenon of the decade.

A sketch show focusing on an eclectic selection of characters, there’s plenty here to enjoy. From catchphrase comedy, including Dafydd, the only gay in the village, and the yeah-but-no-but-yeah-spouting Vicky Pollard, through to quieter, wryly observed takes on everyday life, it’s hard not to be entertained.

It’s tricky to pick highlights, but the trick here is that the show’ creators--Matt Lucas and David Walliams--have created numerous memorable characters, and have a great knack at putting them in tightly written, at times gut-bustingly funny scenarios. Witness the adventures of wheelchair-bound Andy, as he leads his carer Lou on a merry dance, for evidence.

Little Britain isn’t a flawless show by any means, and there are a fair share of troughs to the undeniable peaks. Yet Lucas and Walliams, through both their writing and performances, keep the laughs coming regularly and reliably. For Little Britain is fast, frequently very funny indeed, and has enough moments to ensure these discs will be spun time and time again.--Simon Brew

Synopsis

Meet the characters that inhabit 'Little Britain' in the first and second series of the comedy sketch show. Characters such as: Dafydd, the only gay man in his village (and wants to keep it like that); Fatfighters group leader Majorie Dawes; teenage girl Vicky Pollard, and rubbish transvestite Emily Howard. Along with these characters there is the carer Lou and his wheelchair bound pal, Andy, and the multi-talented actor, singer and composer Dennis `Minder' Waterman. The show presents a wide range of comedy characters in sketches shot both on location and in the studio.

1.0 out of 5 stars Unfunny, unoriginal, over-hyped, 18 Dec 2005
By A Customer
This dvd is one of the most depressing so-called comedies I have ever had the misfortune to witness. It is simply boring. Buy something like the marvellous Peep Show, Spaced or Black Books if you want truly original (and funny) comedy.

This show is a classic case of emperor's new clothes. People seem to think because everybody else says it's great they're somehow deficient if they don't. Let's say it - it's Little Britain that's deficient.

1.0 out of 5 stars !, 3 Aug 2006

(REAL NAME)
After hearing many friends raving about this show and critics comparing it to the (fantastically hilarious) 'The Fast Show' I decided that I must be missing out on something and sat down to watch this 'comedy gem'.

I really wish I hadn't. The show completely lacked wit, relying on tired catchphrases that were hardly funny to begin with. It was also extremely predictable and lacking in originality. It seemed as if Matt Lucas and David Walliams had just come up with one episode then repeated it over and over again in different locations.

If you wan't to watch a good sketch show watch the Fast Show as this is nothing more than an unfunny attempt to copy it.

1.0 out of 5 stars Absolute rubbish, 17 Jan 2006
Little Britain is not funny.

The scripting isn't. The acting isn't. The sketches aren't. It's just not funny.

While I am adverse to presenting opinions as fact, it is in this instance that I can't help but do so. I have a distinct disdain, despair and passionate hate for the makers of this nationwide travesty that dares to call itself a comedy show. It angers me that something this simplistic, this mind-bogglingly plain and bland should be hailed as a 'national treasure' by a well known newspaper and worshipped, practically adored, by it's army of fans.

It is this adoration that I cannot begin to comprehend.

Matt Lucas was moderately funny as George Dawes in retro times banging sticks onto drums and spurting out random catchphrases, but you would hardly describe that as comedy gold. Little Britain presents us with something of the same nature, and along the same lines - but all be it an extended version.

The tried and tested forumlae of 'catchphrase comedy' is thrown here and everywhere with audiences gorging on phrases such as "I want that one" or "I'm the only gay in the village". At the risk of appearing to harsh and almost unfair on this programme, I will admit that these lines could possibly utter a chuckle after the first listen, but it is the incessant repetition and lack of well thought out script work that really doesn't light the comedy spark.

In the 'sketch show' comedy sub-genre, Little Britain also falls short. 'The Fast Show' comes to mind when thinking of decent, successful catchphrase humour with great scripting and great acting to go along with it.

The characters are characters that anybody could have created. Most school children could create better material than this. Lou & Andy? No thankyou. Bubbles? Not tonight. Vicky Pollard? Yeah, how many times have we seen that before, and for god's sake, at least don't attempt the 'teenage rebel' character and then get upstaged by Catherine Tate.

For what it is worth, there may and, I mean, may be moments of actual comedy within Little Britain, but I am almost certain that those evident are ultimately microscopic, especially when in comparison to great sketch shows from over the years such as Big Train and Fast Show.

What we have been provided with is a bunch of dull, tasteless characters that grow tiresome after a second look, and Lucas & Walliams are now milking the general public for what their simplistic comedy tastes are worth.

I suggest if you want real comedy to go elsewhere.

There's a lot of good shows out there.

This show is not one of them.
