5.0 out of 5 stars Enjoy the magic of this story, 30 Nov 2005
By A Customer
I saw this series when it was shown on TV several years ago and have enjoyed so much watching this wonderful story again.
It is such a pity that nice programmes are not made like this anymore, that is, stories that can be enjoyed by children and adults alike, that do not rely on violence and computer graphics to retain the viewer's attention.
I can recomend this captivating story to anyone who enjoys being entertained by innocent magic.

5.0 out of 5 stars A very good production of the CS Lewis classic, 22 Dec 2005
By Keith Joseph (West Berkshire, England) - See all my reviews
(TOP 100 REVIEWER)
All the cast and script are excellent in this children's production which is only marred by the very naff cartoon special effects, at the end, of the white witch's Ghosties and Ghoulies (mostly bright cartoon overlays on the live action that make no effort to blend in). My son (9) commentated `they look rubbish'. However in all the BBC Narnia serialisations the makeup for the Narnian animals is excellent and the sets are imaginative, very well made and varied.. The special effects in the BBC Narnia Chronicles serials get better with each series (Lion Witch Wardrobe being the first). Picture quality likewise improves a little with subsequent serialisations. The varied cast are also totally convincing throughout (although Aslan can get into trouble attempting lip-sync).

Children's acting always seems to be top notch in these BBC adaptations, and they really make the current US sitcoms that dominate the Sky children's channels seem very predictable, unimaginative and formulated. In fact even the new Lion and Witch film, although a CGI masterpiece and a very good cast, hasn't quite got the quality of script of this BBC adaptation, probably because this serialisation is a lot longer and has less SFX action.

My son (8) sat glued to The Lion, Witch & the Wardrobe and we watched all the episodes over two evenings [he got so involved he actually cried when Aslan took a turn for the worst]. Picture quality on the DVD is pretty good. The only reason not to buy this DVD is that the 4 DVD BBC Chronicles of Narnia DVD set is even better value as it also includes the fantastic Narnia serialisations `Prince Caspian', `The Voyage of the Dawn-Treader' and `The Silver Chair' (plus the interesting extra's DVD with interviews with the cast & Blue Peter clips, etc.). My only complaint really is that the BBC didn't serialise the other Narnia books: `The Magicians Nephew', `The horse and his boy' and `The Last Battle'. In many ways though the BBC's 'The box of delights', `Five children and it', and 'The Borrowers' DVD sets compliment the Chronicles of Narnia, so try them as well. I'm sure any preteen child would love them all.

5.0 out of 5 stars Now and then, 25 Dec 2005
By Michael Wilson "Xerones" (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I watched this BBC version of the Narnia tale as a child and with my own children. I have also seen the 2005 film version and without doubt and with the exception of the ubiquitous computer graphics in the film version, the BBC version wins on all counts. The characters are perfect, the children, the animals, the witch and even Father Christmas. This version of Narnia feels real despite the dodgy BBC sets of the 1980’s and the players put real feel feeling and in the case of the White Witch, scariness, into the roles. Well done and what a pity a modern version, with all the resources now available, could not do better.
