DVD Description

The welcome return of the gentle, critically acclaimed comedy set entirely in The Grapes, a small pub in the North of England. Into this warm, slightly hopeless environment come a group of lovable characters who like a pint, but more than that, like each other. Lads Joe and Duffy command centre table and most of the conversation, largely at the expenses of landlord Ken's less acute regulars, such as Eddie, for whom a change in the town's traffic flow can become a preoccupation. Meanwhile, Ken's preoccupation is how his stepdaughter Melanie will respond to having met her real dad, while local policemen Nige and Phil show their concern over the level of crime in the neighbourhood by listening to police radio in the comfort of Ken's snug. Overhearing their conversations and reliving the events in each of their lives is both moving and amusing.

4.0 out of 5 stars Craig Cash Does It Again, 12 Oct 2005
Brilliant. Brilliant. Brilliant. Being a Manc now living in the States I had to wait for the DVD to come out. I sat through all six episodes in one sitting. The first series just shades it for me but this is still true northern comedic genius with some genuinely moving moments.
Tommy steal this series for me with some classic lines and I won't spoil the surprise as to where he spends his time during Mels 21st!
Eddie and Joan contiue to delight as does Ken's Mum Jean. Winnie has a lot bigger role in the series and really does have her finger on the pulse.
Check out Disco Joe's Crazy Disco in the last episode. Brilliant.
I strongly recomend this DVD for the perfect dose of northern homour. I'll be watching this time and time again.

5.0 out of 5 stars It's a grin up north, 12 Mar 2007
By RS Whitehead "Red Rob" (Blackpool, Lancashire UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
It's a sitcom. It's set entirely in a northern pub (in Manchester, I think). It revolves around the customers and staff who exist in a twilight world that many people know little of. And it's superb!

Mixing working class humour and moments of genuine pathos, the most obvious comedy to compare Early Doors with is 'The Royle Family' which is unsurprising as they share one of the same writers (Craig Cash).

A great cast and great writing make Early Doors an absolute gem of a comedy that I'm certain most people would fall in love with (if the Beeb showed it on BBC1 in a proper and regular timeslot). Buy this and you'll soon be shouting catchphrases such as 'No thanks. I'll stay on me own' without any embarassment whatsoever.

Buy both series and you'll be weeping (with laughter) at the untimely demise of Joan's mother's tortoise (JOAN: 'Don't be like that, Tommy. He was like one of the family' TOMMY: 'I can see the resemblance'). You'll be on the edge of your seat as the drama of Jean's missing bag of Maltesers unfolds. You'll feel Joe's pain as he reveals his marriage is in trouble after inadvertently going for a slash in his wife's wardrobe. You'll share the distress when it is revealed that the saucy double act 'Twin Cheeks' aren't really sisters after all. And your eyes will glaze over as Eddie reveals yet more details about the temporary traffic lights.

If you like your jokes to be clearly signposted for you (My Family, Two Pints Of Lager, etc.) as well as corny and unfunny (My Family, Two Pints Of Lager, etc.) then you may not 'get' Early Doors. For those of you with a proper sense of humour, however, I strongly recommend you buy both series of this tremendous comedy.

To the regiment! I wish I was there!

4.0 out of 5 stars Gentle, entertaining and warm, 26 Sep 2008

Early Doors is a great little gem. From the title music (by Roddy Frame off the great "Surf" album), to the regulars of the Grapes, this is comedy with a heart and with some fantastic performances.

From the "old school" coppers to the resident lothario, these are characters that you could imagine drinking with, if only you had a local like the Grapes. If you don't - well, never mind, slam on the DVD, pour yourself a beer and lose yourself for an episode.

Top stuff.
