Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

In a nutshell:
It’s been a national institution for over decade now and the latest FIFA game is finally here, with lots more attacking gameplay, more customisation, more attention to detail, more online and offline multiplayer options and the deepest manager mode ever for the series.

The lowdown:
With Konami’s Pro Evolution Soccer series snapping at its heels with ever more voracity, suddenly it’s FIFA that’s got something to prove. The answer for this year’s edition is a new emphasis on attacking play, with a suite of new tackling, dribbling and shielding controls. Naturally, it’s got all the new stats for the 05/06 season, but with the new create-a-player option you can change the facts to fit you. Also new is a 15 year career manager mode to prove your footballing skills don’t end when you’re off the pitch.

Most exciting moment:
Winning the treble after 15 years of hard graft in the all new career mode.

Since you ask:
According to cover star Wayne Rooney, the FIFA series is popular with many other premiership players, especially when travelling together for away matches.

The bottom line:
The best FIFA game, if not the best football game, ever.
Harrison Dent

Wayne didn't realise falling asleep in a nuclear reactor would have side effects EA were keen to show they were on the ball
More Rooney, here having an existential crisis Wayne to go! I only have eyes for Roo! etc. etc.

4.0 out of 5 stars It's the fun that counts., 6 Feb 2006

    (REAL NAME)
Having owned FIFA 2004 and FIFA 2005, and enjoyed both of these doing the career mode with my dad, it seemed logical to buy FIFA 2006.

When I first got it on day of release, I couldn't wait to get started. I must admit that my first session on it was a great disappointment as it was just too different from FIFA 2005 in terms of cameras and controls to be enjoyable. Back in the box it went. My dad then asked me what it was like as he was keen to play it. I told him that FIFA 2005 was so much better and that FIFA 2006 wasn't worth it.

He convinvced me to try again, and wow do I thank him for it! Once I worked out how to set cameras and difficulties, and also got used to the slightly slower play in the matches, I can say without a doubt that FIFA 2006 is the only football game that I feel is fun to play on your own, especially CAREER MODE.

CAREER MODE has got to be the best thing about this game! I just love the way that you are asked questions by the press, fans and The Board of Directors, with the answers you give determining bonus budgets (on a number of occassions I was granted an exta 1000!) and also how they look upon you and your team. The only down side is that THE TRANSFER MARKET is too clever for its own good, and more often than not you can't sign anyone.

Overall it is very good and easily the equal of FIFA 2005. Yes the AI is very clever, but on more than one occasion I have beaten the likes of Man Utd and Chelsea 7-0! So it can be beaten. Afterall it wouldn't be any fun without a little challenge, and of course it's the fun that counts!

    3.0 out of 5 stars It's ok....., 2 Oct 2005
    By A Customer
FIFA '06 is quite an difficult game to review. Some things it does badly and some well. And as with most EA product, some things it does bizaarely less well than previous versions, which I never quite understand. It does a successful job of feeling like football, and as always the sound and graphics are good (the strange running animations and slightly jerky frame-rate notwithstanding). As I don't have a PS2 or Xbox I'm no Pro Evo fanboy but it is still a quite distant second to that game. Certain things are just annoying like the fact that you can't drill a low AND hard shot (although you can from a set-piece). Everything looks too leisurely so every shot looks half-hearted or it flys over the bar. (And the commentators saying "What an awful shot" don't help! Surely EA Canada have actually SEEN how fast and low a ball can travel when struck correctly? Also there is a (quite ridiculous) disparity in pace between those on the ball and those chasing the ball, so even if you open up space and run into it you can't capitalise as you have to keep passing to avoid defenders reaching you. On the other hand the AI, passing, crossing and general midfield and defensive aspects are good. I'd recommend it still, and with some minor tweaks it would be great. But don't we always think that about FIFA? IT just never quite is.

3.0 out of 5 stars How hard can it be, 7 Oct 2005
    By A Customer
This year fifa is good as always, but not brilliant like it should be. Silly things like not being able to drill a low hard shot (like u could last year) and the keepers making a mess out of a ball they could have caught are starting to annoy me. Also there is so much more u could add to fifa to make it better, like having more realistic features not just in the game play but in the commentary and the fans. Also i remember playing fifa 98 and loving the INDOOR 5-A SIDE FOOTBALL which has not been seen since. Bring it back and make fifa the game it used to be before pro evo takes over.
