4.0 out of 5 stars A French Family Saga, 3 April 2006
By A Customer
This is the saga of a French Family that starts in 1900 and carries on till the financial crisis of the 1930s. It is the Barnery family one of the great producers of fine porcelain in Limoges.

Emmanuelle Beart is a wonderful actress who does truly age thirty years during the film. The central story is one of the love between her character Pauline and her previouly married husband Jean Barnery. Their love is thwarted by circumstances, Jean's decision to rescue the family business at a time of economic uncertainty and unrest among the workers, the war, his religious ex-wifes demands and finally Jean's quest to create porcelain of a fine quality and beauty that few can afford to buy in the 1930s financial crisis. At the end of their lives, they have their love.

The film is adapted from a novel, probably quite a long one, with a large number of characters, so it can be hard to follow the first time you watch it. The subtitles could have been a bit more helpful, or at least not such a sloppy translation of the French.

The recreation of the Limoges pottery factory and the Fine cognac cellar is a visual feast. It is a costume drama in which the drama outshines the costumes.

It lasts three hours and falls into three episodes. It's best to watch it as you might a fine drama on the BBC, an episode at a time.

1.0 out of 5 stars Dreadful DVD production, 4 May 2008
By Tim Greig "timsells" (London) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I was unable to watch the DVD. The film is presented in its original 1:2.35 ratio on a 4:3 letterbox format with subtitles in the black bars. If you zoom the picture to fill the width of your screen, you lose most of the sub titles. So your choice is to stretch the picture or to watch a little tiny picture in the middle of the TV. That's impossible for nearly 3 hours.

Why can't DVD companies standardise on anamorphic widescreen versions? Is it because the USA is still stuck in the stone age of 4:3?
