Product Description

Manufacturer's Description

It goes without saying, but we love saying it anyway - Pro Evolution Soccer 5 (PES 5) makes the best even better. With the new licensed teams, new trademark moves, massively expanded Master League and variable weather conditions, PES 5 ensures that console football is even closer to the real thing.

The best part is, you don't even need to take our word for it...

Arsenal's Thierry Henry, and Chelsea's John Terry, will be staring out from the box when Pro Evolution Soccer 5 is launched, this autumn. The two men, both at the top of their game in the world famous Premiership, are die-hard fans of PES and proud to be involved.

Thierry Henry has admitted: "I have been playing Pro Evolution Soccer games for over 10 years now." He also revealed how much he has enjoyed representing the game since PES 4. "It was great to be the face of such a realistic and engrossing football title, so I was delighted to return for the newest version," he said. "I look forward to being closely involved with the creation and promotion of what promises to be a stunning game."

Premiership champion, John Terry, says: "I've been a massive fan of Pro Evolution Soccer for years now and am really pleased to be able to work with the talented people behind such a fantastic game." More than that, 'JT' also claims that PES is, "the game of choice for lots of players as it is so true to the real thing," adding that, "I'm looking forward to getting involved with the launch of this fifth and best version in the coming months - and getting to play advance versions on the way!"

We've all got so much to look forward to, starting with the retuned controls giving players more control over weighted passes, one-twos, and so on. This ties in neatly with the improved animation, which not only looks more realistic, but requires you to time kicks and shots perfectly for maximum power - you're more likely to scuff the ball and make weak, inaccurate shots if you attempt to play them while off balance or out of step.

In order for you to enjoy the full benefit of the updated controls, Training Mode is extended - rewarding efforts with points used to unlock secrets within the game.

The new licensed clubs are all meticulously detailed, including the authentic representation of names and numbers on their backs. You'll find the most famous players bear an astonishing resemblance to the real thing. Increased detail in all players has been transferred to the Player Design mode, which has been hugely expanded to include more factors determining skill and ability.

Master League, in which you guide a lowly team to glory, now allows player-managers to monitor individual players and see when their health declines.

In all games, weather conditions can be set to 'variable', leading to patchy rain or snow. The new weather conditions further enhance the realism and unpredictable nature of PES matches. Rain or shine, PES 5 will be the greatest console football you've ever experienced.

3.0 out of 5 stars A sinking feeling ... but not going back to FIFA just yet., 14 Jul 2006

Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
Like the Premiership 05-06 season, Pro Evo has become cynical, cagey and lacking the sort of attacking fun that truly puts a smile on your face. Too often, playing for a draw is all you have the bottle for.

So in a way, Pro Evo 5 is very realistic. Certainly the graphics are good, movement and animation is pretty good - it certainly feels as real a game as football as you can get with a joypad in your hand. For this Konami should be applauded, and I think the general feeling of having been let down so many gamers are experiencing is in context of the other Pro Evo games being so exciting. This one is still good - but we might have hoped for so much more ...

In agreeance with many - the strictness with fouls is quite ridiculous, just brushing an opponent with or without a tackle in mind yields free-kicks. Taking free-kicks will seldom result in anything to test the opposite keeper. Strikers of the highest calibre go to jelly in the box. And why does the computer never get booked?

All these and more, highly frustrating.

On the upside - the Master League is thoroughly engrossing as you save up points to buy players and develop a young team of hopefuls. (Shame not more clubs are fully licensed though).

Must frustating of all for me has been the problems I have had with running the game. After working perfectly (if a little sluggish which I believe is a common complaint) suddenly matches freeze up for no reason. Re-installing has helped ... until the same problem has re-appeared. This may be a problem unique to my PC, but I have to complain about the awful customer service of Konami who seem to hide their contact details as well as possible to avoid having to help out their game-players with problems on 'old games'.

Next time, to save the hassle I'll make sure to buy it on PlayStation, but still wont go back to FIFA just yet.

Konami have produced once more an exceptional football game. I personly prefer pc version to the console versions because off the improved graphics and easy update for kits and team names.Gameplay is improved once again.

1.0 out of 5 stars WARNING - DO NOT BUY THIS GAME, 2 Aug 2006

Fun:1.0 out of 5 stars
I've been a loyal pro-ev player since the first edition all those years ago. They have all been difficult at a level that was possible to master in the most satisfying way. Given the hype about the new edition I expected more of the same, but instead we have a game that makes an unresponsive arcade version with a joystick that won't go up seem more fun.

So what are my problems with it? Let me tell you:-

1. Running - the best players have no pace and are easily beaten by nomarks from Lithuania.
2. Control - Ronaldinho knocks the ball ten yards away from himself in the opposite direction to the one he's running when he receives the gentlest of passes.
3. Shooting - Entirely random. Gilardino either skies it into row hexidecimal or places a thunderbolt into the top corner from the half way line. No telling which one you'll get.
4. Dribbling - Joe Cole can't go past anyone, yet the Lithuanian nomark can run rings round Steven Gerrard for ten minutes on end.
5. Tackling - John Terry breathing on a passing player results in a free kick. Average stats at the end are 10-1 in favour of fouls given to the opposition.
6. Referee - Gives nothing for ages and then sends off one of your players.
7. Backpasses - you're not allowed, but the CPM is.
8. Daydreaming - If your player is tackled then don't expect him to move for at least five seconds.
9. Player Switching - You might be chasing the opposition player, be just about to take ball of his toe and your player of choice will be switch for no reason to someone else 20 yards away.
10. The god awful commentary.

Best advice, persist with Pro Ev 4 until number 6 comes out. Hopefully that will be better, but really, this one is unplayable.
