U10 2Gb, 11 April 2006
This is an excellent product and a great alternative to the iPod Nano. Although it is more expensive, I think that it's worth forking out a little extra. The product is an absolutely ideal size player, as it's very small, but not easy to loose and not fiddly to operate. The controls are excellent and a bit different to anything I've seen before, they couldn't be easier to understand. The software is good, although it is a replica of iTunes, but it is brilliant that you can use the player as an external hard drive, so any type of file can be transferred using "My Computer". The screen seems to be the same standard as the PSP but much smaller, so it's great quality for pictures of videos. Unfortunately there are too few types of pictures and videos that the player is capable of displaying though. The radio is good and it's nice to be able to record straight off it - this is a major bonus. So what should you do? If you've got deep enough pockets (and long enough arms), get this player if you want to stand out from the crowd. If you want to blend in with the very many iPod users or you haven't got the funds, then it's too bad. This is a great little device and one that should be made more aware to the public as it is the best of it's kind. Well done iRiver!

Excellent, but flawed., 1 Nov 2006
The U10 is a great gadget. It has an excellent and simple interface which is not more complex than needs be on a small capacity player. The screen is bright and clear, and the screen-clicking navigation is intuitive and easy. The sound is loud and clear (to my ears), with many options for EQing and FX should you want them. You can easily synchronise it using Windows Media Player (which suits me fine), or by dragging and dropping straight into the device (for videos etc). For my purposes it is perfect.
However, there are a few problems which can really reduce your joy. First, the database is regularly corrupted, resulting in songs which have been deleted still being listed in the player and other equally mysterious problems. This is easily fixed with a reinstall of the firmware, but as yet I've found no way of doing this without a lengthy download from the iRiver website via their firmware updating client. Which means that when your player's database becomes irreversibly corrupted you will be stuck with it until you can get online. Then you have to reload all your music and whatever else you have on there.
Second problem lies with the EQ system. I have some very flat-response headphones and I like to boost the bass a little using one of the preset EQs. Doing so often results in digital clipping which is harsh and headache inducing to say the least. Still, I've now found a good setting and the problem has not recurred.
Oh, and one last quibble, it inserts small silences between tracks, which is an ongoing annoyance with most media players. You either live with it, or rip whole albums as single tracks which is no solution to my mind.
Having said all that, I do love the U10, and use it every day. Just be aware there are problems with it.

Amazing, 1 Jun 2006
It took me a long time to finally go for this product as it seemed expensive for its capacity, but boy am i glad i did! This thing is amazing, it doesn't everything i could want it to do and more with brilliant style and ease. The sound quality is excellent as you would expect with an Iriver product and the 'D click system' is very neat indeed
This player is very small and looks great, due to its size i was worried that the video quality wouldn't be up to much, but my worries were unfounded. Cartoons such as family guy are perfect for it, and shows such as the OC still look good despite the lack of screen. To get movies to the right resolution you will need to use iriverter which you can download from the internet and is easy to use.
The bundled software is also useful although you don't need it as XP recognises it as a hard drive.
Overall this player is brilliant, i still get excited when i use as i still can't quite believe how good it is! Ipod? Whats an Ipod?
