I rarely review classical CDs as I don't feel qualified to pass judgement on performances or recording quality - and I shan't do so here.

I had never heard any of these works before, but I was absolutely bowled over on first hearing - and remain so after several further listens. If you know and love Janacek's better known works such as the Glagolithic Mass and The Sinfonietta, then you will love this!

The Excursions of Mr Broucek is a 5 movement suite of orchestral music from his two operas featuring this character. Note that Amazon's track listing is incorrect. The final 'Victory Procession', is apparently Janacek's original verson, to which he only later added vocal parts for the opera.

I am not an opera fan in general, but if either of these two Broucek operas is staged near me, I shall certainly give them a go. Enough said!
