Synopsis

The infamous 'show about nothing' hit its stride in the fifth season, when it reached number three in the ratings, and scored some of its most memorable episodes. Jerry Seinfeld and co-creator Larry David (CURB YOUR ENTHUSIASM) have drawn inspiration from the mundanities and absurdities of their own life experiences many of which are New York-centric and shaped them into the stories that have made Elaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus), George (Jason Alexander), Kramer (Michael Richards), and Jerry (Jerry Seinfeld) some of the most popular and enduring characters on television. In season five, Jerry finds out Elaine faked her orgasms when they were dating, and convinces her to let him try again. George moves back in with his parents, and experiences a reversal of his bad luck when he decides to do the opposite of everything he normally does. Jerry's girlfriend refuses to give Elaine toilet paper in the ladies' room, while Kramer recognises her voice from a sex hotline. This season also includes the episodes 'The Glasses', 'The Masseuse', 'The Fire', and 'The Hamptons'. 22 episodes.

5.0 out of 5 stars But I Don't Wanna Be A Pirate!, 16 Dec 2005
By Colin C "Colin C" (Glasgow) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
If you have bought the first four series of Seinfeld which have been released in the past year, you will already be aware of the sparkling picture quality of the remastered episodes, the building of momentum and characterisation within the programmes themselves as the series go on, and the superb extras which each boxed set has contained.

Series 5 ticks all of these boxes, and to be honest, by this stage, everyone on the programme is on top of their games. The scripts are ingenious, with crackling dialogue and wonderfully interwoven plot lines. One odd extra with that episode is a real speech given by Jerry Seinfeld as the Puffy Shirt itself is given to the Smithsonian Institute, as being of great importance to American culture! The rest of the time, the extras mainly comprise commentaries, a documentary or two, some good interviews.

The 22 episodes here are blindingly good value.... there really isn't one bad one, and they also include 'The Sniffing Accountant', 'The Wife' (with Courtney Cox) and 'The Opposite'.

If you are a Seinfeld fan already, you should get this - immediately! If you are new to the programme, well, you should get this - immediately! Along with Seasion 4, it's the one to invest in.

5.0 out of 5 stars The gang finally hit comic gold, 14 July 2006
By D. Tranter (England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Season 5 was when Seinfeld leaped from being a great show to an all time classic, how it has remained almost anonymous for so long in the UK has amazed me. However, if 'Little Britain' is what gets the laughs here in blighty then something is not right.

Anyhow, by 1994, the scripts were red hot, Jerry Seinfeld was becoming more confident as an actor, George Costanza turned from an irritating cantankerous pain in the neck to a sly, devious character capable of carrying the show in certain episodes ('The Conversion', 'The Fire', 'The Marine Biologist'). It was also the season in which the peripheral characters gained a greater footing with the audience, Frank and Estelle Costanza, and of course the wonderful Newman played by Wayne Knight.

These 21 episodes show represent a brief period in American comedy, TV so good, the like has never been seen since. 'Friends' had a good go from series 3 to 5 but, were nowhere close to matching the comic brilliance of Jerry, George, Elaine and Kramer.

5.0 out of 5 stars glorious , 21 Feb 2008

season five of seinfeld is widely regarded by critics and fans alike as the best of a very good bunch,i will not deviate from that stance one bit here, this is comedy gold and maybe even more than that.
The series is filled with memorable scenes and quotes and situations that you can relate to and even if you cant you can appreciate, the show about nothing as they call it still seems to be about something to me but that only heightens its appeal.
To single out episodes in something as pure as this seems a little wrong but i can pay extra mention to 'the opposite' where george decides to fight against who he is and try and be the opposite to shocking results,'the non fat yoghurt' where jerry curses, its censored but its so funny,'the barber' and 'the puffy shirt',but to be fair they are all good, and with that in mind this is a five star series, top notch indeed.
