A welcome return to real hockey, 21 Sep 2005
After the fiasco that was 05 I almost lost hope in EA Sports, but I decided to try and keep faith with them and...was not dissapointed. Its a great FUN game and is quick responsive and a pleasure as well as a challenge to play. Gone is the black hole defence instead fierce AI keeps the challenge up and high scoring games with quick passing and nice stick work abounds. Great game worth every penny.

so very, very close......, 21 Feb 2006
This game is such a massive improvement over nhl 2005. The player control is so much more responsive and the moving of the deke control back onto a single stick is absolutly inspired as it means that you no longer need to use the second thumbstick to work the stick (which i never found comfortable). The feeling of taking part in a flowing deking movement down the ice using the new control is wonderful (though they perhaps should have built in some kind of limiter as the puck sticks a little too well to the stick leading to the deking having a few "hyper active hedge trimmer" moments as your player skates down the ice waggling his stick furiously!!!). The new player movement feels very good as the inertia of the bodies in motion on ice is captured in a convincing and realistic manner. There are still a few issues with the players when they have to decide when to turn around and skate backwards or when to turn around and chase the player but these are now, thankfully, minor and not the problem it was in nhl 2004. The dynasty mode is still there and is excellent providing the ice hockey fan with months and months of in depth gameplay giving the game at times an almost RPG-like quality with the building of a francise, however, it would have been nice for some of the new cba issues to have been included (as the game does not include the new salary limitations for a start) but this is just being picky i suppose. I still hate the chemistry system that was introduced in nhl 2005 as the decisions on who plays well with who seems very erratic with not enough feedback from the game on why certain players dont like each other. this leaves team selection as a trial and error effort (this is particularly annoying if you have just landed a superstar on your team and find everyone hates playing with him and you can not work out why!!!). Another gripe is that the goalies stats dont seem to affect the player performance as much as it should. for example, in real life, having a solid netminder can win you games, whereas in the game,if you have a netminder with awesome stats and one with average stats the computer seems to have suspiciously little difficulty in getting past either netminder (though this might just be me being paranoid). A most welcome return to the game is the player creation mode. this may not sound much at first, however, it was only its absence from the previous game that made you really appriciate how having the ability to put the latest draft rookies and (of course) yourself on the rosters and in the game was actually very important to the overall game as it made the whole experience more your own as well as well as allowing you to ensure that the francise mode was more authentic (for example, imagine the commited nhl fan playing the 05-06 season with none of the latest crop of rookies in it!). One moan about the player creation mode though is the face editor because all the players i create all seem to end up looking the same (that angry boxer look) as the options available are very limited (surprising if you consider the excellant customisation features of EAs Madden series)but the complaint is very minor. The graphics are excellant, with the player models looking, for the most part, like their real life counterparts. The player animations are of an excellant quality and the sound effects are brilliant making your feel every check and shot. The only moan about the sound would be the commentry, which is adequate but comes across as little flat and uninspiring, but otherwise the presentation is top drawer. To wrap up, i may have moaned a lot about this but dont get me wrong, this is an excellant game and well worth a go if you enjoy ice hockey or even if you just want an exciting game in general. The overall package provides the ice hockey fan with enough depth to satisfy and there is certainy enough there to please the passing gamer as well. its just the minor gripes that i have about it make it, i feel, fall just short of greatness (but only just short).

Nhl 2005 with added Perks, 24 Oct 2005
NHL 2006 brings all the elements, of the 2005 game back with a more retro feel, ie stars under players rather than onimous circles, everything polish and done up but principally it the same game as NHL 2005 just with the added original perks, these being:: Create own team : Create own players : Has more european teams : brings back NHL 1994 (albeit with made up players, why they didn't incorporate the original i don't know) which of course has best glass breakages, deaths on the ice. NHL is the greatest game ever, better than PES, great multi player modes, great goals, great franchise modes, right balance of difficulty. I can't imagine a more realistic feeling ice hockey game, so if you love sports, and love multi playing games, where you can kill your mates, you can't in football then this game is for you, and everybody. Personally I still prefer the 2003 because of the D-pad controls, but then that isn't up to date so you can't have it both ways.
