DVD Description

Made in 1979, this Emmy Award winning The Lion, The Witch And The Wardrobe perfectly captures the spirit and charm of C.S. Lewis' famed book with a unique, visual style all its own. This magical film is presented here digitally restored with the original UK voice cast for a new generation to discover.

Synopsis

Four young children, Peter, Susan, Edmund and Lucy are evacuated to the country house of an old Professor. Whilst playing 'hide and seek' Lucy enters a wardrobe and discovers the magical world of Narnia, where an evil witch has pronounced herself Queen and rules over the fawns, beavers and mystical creatures of the kingdom. She has cast a spell over the land so that it is always winter but never Christmas. Only Aslan the Lion can help them restore the seasons to Nania.

4.0 out of 5 stars Still enjoyable as a grown up!, 21 Oct 2005
By A Customer
I always think of this animated version of the classic tale very fondly, since it is single handedly responsible for me discovering the wonderful world of Narnia! Yes, the animation is rather dodgy, but this is made up for by a fantastic musical score and the story has been minimally messed with, always important in adaptations from books. Whilst this may not hold the thrill for me now that it did when I first saw it around 25 years ago, it is still very enjoyable. Thank goodness, it is the British soundtrack version, although unfortunately the American credits have been put on the end of the film, leaving the likes of Sheila Hancock, Arthur Lowe, Leo McKern, June Whitfield and Leslie Phillips sadly uncredited!

4.0 out of 5 stars Still a classic., 5 Dec 2005
By peteg1969 "peteg1969" (SURREY England) - See all my reviews
I'm so glad the new live action movie of "The Lion, The Witch And The Wardrobe" got made as it's a great excuse for this superb animated version to finally get the DVD treatment.

Seeing this back in 1979 it was absolutley magical and although it shows it's age, it's still a great movie.

This particular DVD has indeed the original british cast lending thier voices (Arthur Lowe, Leslie Phillips etc) but the end credits list the american actors which is strange.

The extras are not too bad, with commentary from some of the crewand plenty of production stills and early sketches as well as a few storyboards.

There is a brief but interesting interview with the producer about the problems getting the movie made and there is also a deleted scene from towards the end of the movie whic doesn't show any animation as such but retains the original voice over and shows how the scene would have played out with the aid of early sketches.

It's well worth buying but I feel that people will be disappointed with this if they have seen the new cgi movie and expect a similar film.

4.0 out of 5 stars Animated Narnia from 1979, 15 Jan 2006
By Erich Mohr "Arandil" (Sonoma County, Ca) - See all my reviews
This is the animated version of The Lion The Witch and The Wardrobe made by the same animation group that made many of the Peanuts cartoons (Mr Melendez himself was Snoopy many times). The animation was about average for the time, which looks very crude by todays' standards, but was quite good for a television production of the 70's/80's. There has been no restoring of the film to my knowledge, so this is as clean a transfer as one can get from film without resorting to digital cleaning (a lengthy process).

Extras listed are simply text information, there are no featurettes, clips, etc.

One word of warning, the principle actors have all been replaced with American dubs, with the exception of Aslan himself, so those looking to find the ITC (or PBS if you are from the States) broadcast version, you might be let down.

There is another version of this available on DVD with the original British cast, available only as Region 2 or 4 DVDs. This other version also contains commentary, although fairly limited according to those who have it. I'll take any suggestions as to where to find a Region 1 version.

Hope this helps anyone trying to confirm WHICH version of the animated feature this is.
