DVD Description

Made in 1979, this Emmy Award winning The Lion, The Witch And The Wardrobe perfectly captures the spirit and charm of C.S. Lewis' famed book with a unique, visual style all its own. This magical film is presented here digitally restored with the original UK voice cast for a new generation to discover.

Synopsis

Four young children, Peter, Susan, Edmund and Lucy are evacuated to the country house of an old Professor. Whilst playing 'hide and seek' Lucy enters a wardrobe and discovers the magical world of Narnia, where an evil witch has pronounced herself Queen and rules over the fawns, beavers and mystical creatures of the kingdom. She has cast a spell over the land so that it is always winter but never Christmas. Only Aslan the Lion can help them restore the seasons to Nania.

4.0 out of 5 stars Still a classic., 5 Dec 2005
By peteg1969 "peteg1969" (SURREY England) - See all my reviews
I'm so glad the new live action movie of "The Lion, The Witch And The Wardrobe" got made as it's a great excuse for this superb animated version to finally get the DVD treatment.

Seeing this back in 1979 it was absolutley magical and although it shows it's age, it's still a great movie.

This particular DVD has indeed the original british cast lending thier voices (Arthur Lowe, Leslie Phillips etc) but the end credits list the american actors which is strange.

The extras are not too bad, with commentary from some of the crewand plenty of production stills and early sketches as well as a few storyboards.

There is a brief but interesting interview with the producer about the problems getting the movie made and there is also a deleted scene from towards the end of the movie whic doesn't show any animation as such but retains the original voice over and shows how the scene would have played out with the aid of early sketches.

It's well worth buying but I feel that people will be disappointed with this if they have seen the new cgi movie and expect a similar film.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cartoon version of the L, W & W, 28 Jan 2006
This is a very good cartoon version of C. S. Lewis's the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.
The actual film is about 1 1/2 hours long excluding extras.

It stays very accuratly to the original dialogue of the book, which is always great to see.
There are a few slight changes to the storyline, eg. Aslan gives the children the gifts instead of Father Christmas, Maugrim has become Fenris Ulf, there is no robin to lead the children to the beaver and there is no mention of the housekeeper or why they are staying at the professors house. But I think these were done more to keep the length to a fixed time, they do not distract from the story at all.
The animation is fine although it will soon be 30 years old so it is not as good as some things around now.

We now have copies of this film with the English cast voices and the American cast voices and it really makes no difference which you have when you are watching the film. Although if you saw it many years ago it may matter more to you.

This is a very good introduction for children to this story as well as being highly enjoyable for adults.

The reason I have given it 5* is because of how true the dialogue stays to the book all the way through the film.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great , 14 Jul 2007
By Meadows (Somerset. UK) - See all my reviews
This is the original, or the DVD I purchased is, mine came in a with the modern looking art work as seen one other sites with cardboard outer (much like the latest Narnia cases, not the one shown above). The copy I received is exactly the same as seen in the early 80's and also the one I managed to copy from free view several months ago. The film is a crisp picture with the original voices British (not American as some reviews say).
As for people being disappointed with this and it not being what you thought you were getting, read the description this is a 1979 Animated B.B.C Film (actually American, but picked up quickly by the B.B.C). Do not mix this up with other animations or other TV versions. If you are looking for the old animation which many of us are this is it!
