Product Description

Blues and Soul

"Skalpel fuse orchestral elements with smokey beats and oodles of jazz... sounding like an ever-so-slightly more charged Cinematic Orchestra"

IDJ

"Think classic soundtracks, underground bars, illicit moods, and some beautifully structured and played authentic cold war jazz. Excellent work."

5.0 out of 5 stars HMMMMMMMMMMM NIIIIIIIIICE!, 25 Oct 2005
By Mr. D. R. Ashton - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
As the previous reviewer stated, this album really feels like a continuation of the previous album. Konfusion is Skalpel's 2nd album for Ninja tune. Ninja still haven't got round to releasing their albums which saw a Poland only release. Hopefully we will see these one day.
So, onto the review. Konfusion feels a lot more relaxed and dare i say "chilled out" than their last release. the Double bass and jazz drums are still there, but this feels way more downbeat. Perfect late night listening along a sampled Cinematic Orchestra feel.
Worth noting that it comes with a 2nd cd (way to go ninja!!!) of remixes from the previous album. Sure, some aren't that great, but all remixes are here from the 6 track ep in which Skalpel released the best remixes submitted. Good to see the Skalpel remix of 1958 also. Very nice indeed. I can just hear the jazz dude form the Fast Show "hmmm, nice".
Also on the 2nd cd are b-sides from previous eps. I love little bonuses like this, although it means the original Skalpel purchases I have made are moribund.

Essential.

4.0 out of 5 stars Like being in a smoky Jazz Bar, 19 Oct 2005
By Mr. J. J. Niland (London) - See all my reviews

A very good follow-up to their self-titled debut. Put the CD on and turn the lights down low for this one. It's jazz, and it's very cool jazz.

To be honest, I dont think it's as good as their debut. I remember listening to that and being able to hum some of the tunes from it days after because they were that memorable. I've yet to do so with this album, but that is hardly a failing.

In conclusion: If you liked Skapel's first album, then you'll find a lot of pleasure in this one. They remind me a lot of The Cinematic Orchestra, who are my favourite Ninja Tune artists, so if you like the Cinematics then you'll appreciate Skalpel too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Smoked Polish Jazz Sausage, 17 Oct 2005
By C. J. Statham - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I'm reclining on my bed watching the rain outside. I'm feeling absolute contentment and total relief that the album I have just bought is indeed the glimmering ode to Skalpel's talent that I hoped it would be.

I can't explain how refreshing it is to see a band/artist produce a second album that is just as good if not better than the first. The first Skalpel album was a wonderfully arranged (if not smoke tainted)excursion into nu-jazz. It boasted some fantastic tracks (sculpture) that still haunt my stereo now.

Konfusion is a natural progression on the first album. Skalpel have built a niche for themselves and they have carved it out of a grubby but ultimately satisfying sub-genre. Expect Lavish synths masterfully entwined with rythmns and beats that actually sound like you are deep in the belly of some lost Polish Jazz cellar. The tracks have more of a continuity to them than the experimental perspective that occasionally prevailed on the first album.
This is late-night earplay at its best. Inoffensive, well orchestrated and sounding better with each listen.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good stuff...
Although I am a fan of ninja tune material when I'm in the mood, too often I find it a bit too musically accomplished to to the point of self congratulation. Read more
