Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
Blackalicious--producer Chief Xcel and MC Gift Of Gab--are two of the most consistently innovative individuals to hail from California’s fecund Bay Area. They have always managed to deliver a solid balance of clever rhymes, breathtaking flows and bumpin’ beats and this latest long-player takes their funky manifesto to yet another level. Retaining the commercial feel of their last LP Blazing Arrows, The Craft draws on the duo’s long history of b-boyism, featuring considered collaborations with a vast array of live musicians and guests--Floetry, George Clinton and Larry Saunders among them. Xcel’s soundtrack is deep but not indulgent, and Gab’s flow remains as breathtakingly sharp as it ever was.

It might be a long way from the rawness of their groundbreaking Melodica EP (1995) but The Craft demonstrates how it’s possible to be perfectly accessible while remaining creatively untouchable.

5.0 out of 5 stars Blackalicious have done it again!!, 11 Oct 2005
This review is from: The Craft (Audio CD)
I can't believe that 4 weeks after its release, no one has reviewed this album thus far. So i'll take this oppurtunity, to explain the sheer briliance of this album. Although fans of Blackalicious would expect nothing less than awesome. They just keep improving, whether this album tops "Blazing Arrow" remains to be seen but nonetheless this album should be picked up by all fans of hip-hop really. This is what hip-hop is all about.
Unfortuately, quality hip-hop is been overshadowed by what is in the charts. On this album, as we've come to expect Gab is lyrically tight and Xcel has stepped his game up once again.
I wasn't sure if this album was going to be good - after the largely dissapointing solo effort by Gab (4th Dimensional Rocket Ships), but its truly amazing. And when you have artists like George Clinton on this (and Gil Scott-Heron on Blazing Arrow) wanting to collaborate then you know your onto something special. So to end, if interested in Hieroglyphics, Little Brother and true hip-hop etc.. check this out.

5.0 out of 5 stars Blackalicious tops again, 4 Aug 2006
By Andy Raab (Shropshire, England) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Craft (Audio CD)
The Craft hey...? Fortunately it's not the soundtrack for that naff witch film with bulging eyes etc..
It's actually yet another full-length offering from one of the finest American hip hop groups to have graced the late 90's and 20xx's. Okay, so fans will know, it's no Blazing Arrow, or Nia, but what it does show (much like J5's Feedback) is that these folks still make great music, still rhyme with the smoothness of babys buttocks, and still make me want to tell everyone how great their newest offering is. I like it. A lot.

Newcomers would do well to get the earlier ones too, they're all great.

4.0 out of 5 stars True Pioneers....., 27 Feb 2006

This review is from: The Craft (Audio CD)
A welcomed return from the one of the finest and most innovative hip-hop groups of all time. As a part of the legendary Solesides crew with Shadow and Latyrx they wrote the script for independent, artist-led, underground west coast hip-hop labels in the 1990's.

This album is amazing, and has truly lived up to all of my highest expectations. Still deeply rooted in the dirty funk sound of San Fransico's rich musical heritage, there is a definate nod to Sly/Parliament etc (with an appearance from Clinton on 'Lotus Flower').

One of the most original tracks, taking it back the essence of the 'battle' is egosonice wardrums. Peace and Gab go to head to head in a blistering barrage of spitting that is really something special. World Of Vibrations Supreme People, Rhythm Sticks, Lotus Flower, My Pen And Pad, Side To Side, Automatique and Your Move are all also classics, adding new dimension and flavour to the Blackalious canon.

Inspirational, highly motivational.

Based on this album I think they peaked and now they are just riding the wave. The first track is good, but after that I could be listening to anyone. Read more
