Product Description

Manufacturer's Description

Darkwatch is a cinematic 1st person shooter (FPS) blending the Vampire-Horror and Western genres.

They grind their enemies for fuel, fashion their skin into protective cloaks and create weapons designed to exterminate en masse, and they're the good guys! They are the Darkwatch, a mysterious secret society that has protected humanity from evil since the dawn of civilization. Their newest and most deadly agent is Jericho Cross, an outlaw gunslinger pulled into their ranks by an unfortunate close encounter with a vampire lord.

Jericho's only chance of regaining his stolen humanity is to pursue the Vampire Lord through an American Frontier overrun by evil minions. Along the way Jericho relies on his deadly gun-fighting skills and advanced weapons and vehicles created by the Darkwatch, owing as much to sorcery as to technology. As half-vampire, his superhuman abilities allow him to move, see and take damage no living man could. When he's in tight spot or needs an extra burst of speed, he can summon his demonic horse from the very ground he stands on, firing his weapons from horse-back or crushing the rotten skulls of undead opponents with flailing hooves.

To fight a monster, one must become a monster. Jericho Cross had no choice...but only he can save the West and his own soul from eternal damnation.

3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting, but disappointing., 21 Dec 2005
By Mr "X" (Glasgow, United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
I bought this game because I head heard it was a combination of the Wild West and vampires, which it is and that aspect works well due to an imaginative story, but the gameplay is very disappointing.

The graphics are superb, and the sound is excellent, but the game is so samey that, unless you are in the mood for a senseless blood crazed first person shooter, you will be quite bored after about 20 minutes of gameplay.

I truly enjoy FPS games and this really is a well made game, but after playing it for over an hour I just felt I was killing all the same enemies and it got very tedious.

As with all FPS games the weapons are superb.

A game to rent first or buy relatively cheap (like I did), but don't expect the best PS2 game as your hopes will be greatly let down. Not the worst game on PS2 by far. A good attempt at a truly unique game.

Creativity 10/10
Graphics 9/10
Gameplay 6/10
Repeat playability 3/10

3.0 out of 5 stars Very fun while it lasts, but far too short., 23 Nov 2007

Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
The essential concept behind Darkwatch is a First-Person-Shooter set in a combined horror/western setting. This premise is executed very well but it feels like they just got bored half way through and sadly the highly enjoyable gameplay doesn't have much story behind it and doesn't last long enough to make up for it.
The gameplay is pretty standard for an FPS, with a good variety of enemies to come up against and standard array of weaponry (pistol, shotgun, sniper-rifle, etc) enhanced for fighting the undead by strapping axe-heads or sword blades to the butts so melee attacks take on an extremely satisfying feel appropriate to the game's focus on engaging enemies up-close. Combat is fun, high energy and given a well-thought-out supernatural dimension as you play a vampire capable of temporary levitation and various other bits of magical destruction enhancement and many of your enemies will employ their own unique powers to try and outmaneuver you.
Sadly the game's story lets you down in a big way after the initially intriguing premise, with no real character development to speak of and one highly unsurprising twist, there can't be more than two or three cut-scenes that last more than a few seconds. This leaves the experience feeling essentially shallow and detracts from the main gameplay quite significantly after a while.
The game is also pretty brief. There's only eight-or-so hours of gameplay here and the multiple difficulties are fine but there's no real reason to go play them.
It's fun while it lasts and if you're a fan of FPS games you should probably give it a look if it's going cheap. But it never gets beyond 'pretty fun for a bit' and you won't be missing much if you don't play it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Built up and Let Down, 20 Mar 2006
By Shane (Leeds, England) - See all my reviews
When i first saw the game advertised, it struck me as quite an interesting idea...

As most would, i went out bought and played the game... and got bored very quickly...

The gameply is too slow compared to a number of shooters at the moment and the story drags.

Although entertaining to begin with, you later realise there is too much introdyuced from the start and not enough things left to discover later on.
