CD Description

Originally released in 1975 'A Night At The Opera' was arguably Queen's crowning moment and to celebrate it's 30th anniversary the album has been carefully remastered. Queen took elements from their first three studio albums and brought them all together in this mix of pop, prog-rock, metal, and hard rock which culminates in possibly one of the most influential Queen songs ever 'Bohemian Rhapsody'. Also included in this deluxe edition is a bonus DVD featuring original videosand newly recorded videos made especially for this release.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply Mind Blowing!, 23 Dec 2005
By Keith J. Lambert "zephead5" (Suffolk, UK.) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
The work that has been put into this production (especially the DVD with surround sound) is astounding. The clips are not old promos that have all been seen before but an interesting patchwork of live Queen footage and vintage films that add a splash of humour, particularly during Seaside Rendezvous and Good Company. The way the footage has been synch-ed with the studio sound is mind blowing. It must have taken months!

You will NOT appreciate the splendour of this release unless you have your surround sound set up properly! If you have, be prepared for a real treat. You will hear this legendary album from a totally different perspective and appreciate just how Queen worked their magic in the studio. By the way, this release is far superior to the surround track on the DVD-Audio.

All in all a fantastic celebration and a fitting tribute to one of the most innovative rock albums of all time. A true work of art!

5.0 out of 5 stars One of Queen, and rocks finest, 22 May 2006
By David Lovie (Aberdeen, United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
One of Queens's finest album, and really one of rocks finest. An album of brilliant songs and song writing, and an incredible display of studio perfectionism and mastery of all the tricks and techniques they could create.
An ominous starting to the album with opening piano flurries leading into a heavy doom laden guitar part, spitting itself into `Death on two legs' a venomous song queen wrote to their last manager with whom they had an acrimonious split a short while before. After this Queen then go on to show their mastery of many different sounds and styles of music, from the Rock of `Death on two legs' and `I'm in love with my car', to acoustic ballads like '39 and `Love of my life', and more jaunty happy/silly songs like `Lazing on a sunny afternoon', `Seaside rendezvous' or `Good company'.
A big mention must go out two the last two tracks of this album though, the ever popular (and with good reason) Bohemian Rhapsody and God save the Queen (more recently played from the top of Buckingham palace by Brian May for the Queens Jubilee concert). Bohemian Rhapsody is a tale of a murder and a boys thoughts on what he has done and what will happen to him, from the slow ballad section of the first section, leading two an epic guitar solo to the back and forth section of `We will not let him go... Let him go' to the huge guitar riffs and rock of the ending and the final vocal lines ending the song, one song it is virtually impossibly not to sing along to, and however often it gets played, somehow still an awesome song I love hearing yet again. It's almost worth watching the film Wayne's World for their rendition of part of this song in a car, the heartfelt singing and head banging as it drops into the heavy section. The album then finishes perfectly to the sounds of God Save the Queen played as a huge and epic sounding guitar piece.
The 30th anniversary edition has the first (music) disc remastered from the origonal tapes, so top notch quality all round, the second disc being the album on dvd, all in the same order as the album, but with video footage alongside it, the videos released at the time for the better known songs, and new images made from archive footage and live clips and so on for the lesser known songs. Probably not really necessary viewing, but interesting none the less and a cool visual showing of the album.

One of the finest rock albums out there.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stunning Surround Sound, 12 May 2007
By gnagfloW (Rosa Barks) - See all my reviews
I wasn't sure whether I should buy this version or not. I already had an earlier version in my collection but rave reviews, and the fact that A Night at the Opera is among my favorites through the years, convinced me to buy this updated version.

The re-mastering job on the CD version is great. The sound on the DVD version is, however, nothing less than stunning. The intro of Death on Two Legs gives an indication what is in store. When the drums roar during the chorus in the back speakers, there is no question about it, this is a bonanza sound experience. Most of the album sound wise is a roller coaster ride and with the great music accompanying it, this is a most buy.

The videos are mostly old Queen live footage, plus the videos originally shot for the singles. Some reviewers have given negative remarks about them but despite some problems with sound and sight being out of sync, I find the outcome being as good as it can be considering the limited options. God Save the Queen, with recent Brian May footage during the beginning and at the end Freddie walking of stage, is a very fitting finale of this set.

The packaging is extravagant, exemplifying the great detail put into this re-release. Much pride is inherent in this set and I recommend buying it, even if one may own an older version.
