Product Description

From the Label

At the end of their American tour last year, Tull leader Ian Anderson was persuaded by the folks at XM radio in Washington to go into their studio in front of a live audience to record a live version of what is regarded by many as Tull’s seminal work. Yes, the multi-platinum Aqualung album.

Only Ian and guitarist Martin Barre remain from the original line up who recorded Aqualung back in January 71. Most of the current band were babes in arms at the time or in the case of bassist Jon Noyce only a mere twinkle in his parents eyes. Both Ian and Martin were initially against the idea but when persuaded they agreed to recreate one of their most important recordings in a live format on the grounds that the live recording gave both the band and its ever loyal audience a chance to re-experience it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not the kind you have to wind up on Sundays, 6 Oct 2005

What a really good idea. Get a supergroup into a small radio studio and ask them to reproduce entirely, live, one of their most successful albums. Don't allow any retakes (well one or two) and give it a 'playing in the front room' ambiance. If like me, just the thought of having Jethro Tull do this is enough to make your reach for the One-Click button, then do not resist the temptation to do so.

Jethro Tull, or more precisely the remaining members, Anderson and Barre, augmented by some very fine young musicians, authentically reproduce their former glory - live! Complete and with additional dialogue at the end of the CD in order to avoid interrupting the flow.

You are undoubtedly reading this because like many of us old 'wrinklies' you owned and loved the original and are intrigued about how well it has survived the last 30-odd years. Even if you have the excellently re-mastered original version on CD, you will want to own this live event as well because it really does not disappoint at all.

The execution by the band is flawless. Whether or not you agree with the content of Anderson's transparently cynical and hectoring message about organised religion, the quality of the music has a timeless feel and stands up against anything from the current cadre of angry young men on MTV2. Of course, you try telling younger people that nowadays and they won't believe you!

Listening to Ian Anderson in full flood on either flute or acoustic guitar I am reminded again that he is a musical virtuoso. The solo acoustic guitar introduction to 'My God' is a wonderful piece of composition for guitar in its own right.

This particular version of Aqualung, is required listening for any serious appreciation of how to compose, arrange and deliver first class adult orientated rock music, with a message.

4.0 out of 5 stars Aqualung Live in 2004 - good idea?, 16 Oct 2005
By A Customer
I was quite sceptical about whether a live version of Aqualung was going to be a good idea or not - there have been so many re-hashes of existing track lists in recent years I was concerned that this would be another one. This version of Aqualung is much more than a re-hash od the tracks though. It all sounds very good and genuinely live. A number of the tracks e.g. Mother Goose are quite different from the originals and if a few more tracks had been a bit more different it would have been even better. Ian Andersons voice sometimes struggles to reproduce the same sound as he did 34 years ago but overall the musicianship quality is excellent.
Much better than I expected and well worth buying.

This is Tull at their Best. Absolutely stunning. Wish there was a dvd of this happening?
Nothing wrong here. Yes its about nearly 35years down the line but these boys can still rock.
What can I say a must for every Jethro Tull fan. Buy this while its available.
