Product Description

CD Description

Yello exploded like the sun with STELLA, their claim to big-time fame. Dieter Meier and Boris Blank's modus operandi was creating a sophisticated type of dance music that managed to have wide appeal without sacrificing its strangeness. Meier's vocals, often more songspiel than singing, jump from film noir and back again. From the twinkling starlight, disco grooves of "Vicious Games" and "Domingo", to the shuffling synthesizers and air of menace broached on "Desire", Meier's vocals suggest more than a whiff of panther-esque sexuality.
Of course, STELLA's piece de resistance is the vocoder-laced chunk-funk of "Oh Yeah", which has shown up in films from FERRIS BUELLER'S DAY OFF to THE SECRET OF MY SUCCESS. An effective little chiller, it features Meier's most perverse (and studio-processed) vocal FX layered over outer-space synth washes, rattling bass sounds, interstellar whistles and cries in the night, and a seriously pumping beat. Its three minutes of pure dancehall ecstasy doesn't diminish the rest of the album a bit, but it's quite a centerpiece all the same.

5.0 out of 5 stars Remastered at long last..., 16 Nov 2005
Like many CD's produced throughout the 80's, Yello's first clutch of albums suffered with that characteristic 'flat' CD sound, which are frankly quiet compared to todays compact disc releases. So "hooray", for these remastered versions. "Stella" is an easy place to start, as it's possibly their most accessible and is still frankly superb. There are too many classic Yello moments here to mention; well okay, 'Desire', "Vicious Games' & 'Angel No' are timeless. Along with the richer sound, they have also added a B-side and three rather good (old-fashioned-extended) 12" versions finished-off in a nice digipack. A class act indeed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Electro-horror classic, dodgy remaster, 29 Dec 2006
Like many CD's produced throughout the 80's, Yello's first clutch of albums have now been "remastered" by banging the master tape through a compressor and a limiter to make the sound more "in-yer-face", like a Sugababes album or whatever. Cheers, guys, just what we needed. Unfortunately there's now a dilemma for the fan: buy this version because of the extra B-side and 12-inch tracks, or stick with the old CD version with its faithful reproduction of Yello's master tape? I'm hoping that record companies will see the light before long and give us the best of both worlds but [in philosophical font] with grainy MP3s taking over the world, I don't see it happening anytime soon. A missed opportunity, 'cos Stella is one of the most terrifying, groovy, danceable, hammer horror albums you're likely to find. The bass on "Stalakdrama" is floor-shaking, whilst "Oh Yeah" sees them putting on the dancing shoes that would pay the rent for the remainder of the 80s. Still a 5-star album.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Album!, 9 April 2006
One of the best albums of the 80s as far as I'm concerned, but I really can't bring myself to buy it for a third time - I have the original vinyl, and a CD release, but 'remastered' means little to me. If you haven't got it already and have a yen for Yello then it's glorious, glamorous 80s technopop at its best, second only to "You Gotta Say Yes...."
