4.0 out of 5 stars Exceptional value - but where's the words?, 21 April 2006
By UK Scribe (Bromley Kent) - See all my reviews
The title Britten conducts Britten Operas is a bit misleading - all the pieces in this extensive set are choral works. All have been assembled from Decca's catalogue of definitive performances conducted mainly by the composer himself. A few of the works don't appear to be still available as single disks - so if you want a copy, you will have to buy this set. But at the price of just over £2 per CD, who can complain? Highlight of the set for me was the War Requiem. The only downside - and it's a fairly big one - there's a booklet containing track listings and notes about the music but no libretti, unlike the single disc issues of these pieces which had libretti.

5.0 out of 5 stars Britten-Pears triumph!, 3 April 2009
By Mr. S. J. Moore (Hampshire, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Another stunning compendium and excellent value. Personally, I prefer this set but only because it contains my personal Britten favourites. Both this and the volume 4 bring together the original recordings of so much of Britten's output. Much of this material is scarcely performed these days, let alone recorded and yet these recordings still sound as fresh as the day that they were made under the composer's baton. An additional disc of Britten rehearsing the War Requiem reveals not only his dry wit and tact but his amazing attention to the tiniest detail of his masterpiece, trying to help the choir through some of the more difficult areas.
The Burning Fiery Furnace still sparkles its magic with Pears as Nebuchadnezzar.
For lovers of the Pears-Britten musical partnership, these 2 boxed sets are a must-have!
