3.0 out of 5 stars An excellent introduction to both bands, 15 Sep 2005
By Mr. H "the-rocker.co.uk" (Embra) - See all my reviews
(TOP 100 REVIEWER)
Boston band 27 and the UK act Twin Zero have teamed up for a split EP through Undergroove Records. 27 have have handed over 2 new tracks - "Halflife" and "Downfall Of The Upright" in advance of their second album, "Holding On For Brighter Days" and Twin Zero have an edited version of "Monolith" and a brand new track, "In Sha Allah".

However, the added value really comes when the two bands combine forces on "27:00", a cunningly titled remix, which manages to meld elements of all four songs into a compelling remould, with an all new ending, courtesy of Twin Zero guitarist, Rueben Gotto. A novel and inspired idea.

27 have been road dogs with Johnny Truant and Million Dead amongst others, and they certainly sound like a band who know each other intimately.

Twin Zero are a progressive metal marvel, and the two songs here, make me want to hunt down their "Monolith" album immediately, so mission accomplished. The thought of a 20 minute title track has my appetite fully whetted.

An excellent introduction to both bands, with the bonus feature well worth a listen.

5.0 out of 5 stars 27, and Twinzero lite. Amazing...but short., 2 Feb 2006
By A Customer
The only problem with this EP is it's far too short. That's it. 27 are on the Hydra Head label (along with Isis/Pelican/Cave-In, etc.) but are a lot quieter than most of their label-mates. Here they purvey a brand of mainly acoustic floaty proggy type stuff with gorgeous female vocals that I found particularly pleasing. The second track reminds me of Lamb crossed with Elastica for some bizarre reason.

Twinzero turn it down from 11 for their two songs, with Karl Middleton opting for his angelic croon to ensure the tracks mesh well with their 27 counterparts. Track 3 reminds me of Alice in Chains doing something acoustic - I think it's due to the backing vocals. Track 4 starts off very Neurosis (or maybe Anathema) before building into one of the most beautiful acoustic versions of a metal song I've ever heard...(The original can be found on the Twinzero album, 'Monolith') The last track is a genius remix concocted by Reuben Gotto (the Twinzero mastermind) out of samples from the previous four tracks - this guy has way too much talent to spare.

I bought this EP, loved it and then bought 'Monolith'... Be warned, it's a LOT heavier than this - and just as awesome.
