3.0 out of 5 stars Well played and recorded but does not add up to a satisfying whole, 14 Aug 2007

As a subscriber to CBSO concerts and a great admirer of Sakari Oramo's work in Birmingham (under the initial huge disadvantage of being compared to Rattle)I wish I could be more complimentary about this disc. If only Warner had recorded the conductor and orchestra in Mahler 5 in the interpretation he delivered in Symphony Hall a year earlier they would have had a top ranking CD. As it is, this interpretation seems uneasy and does not add up to a satisfying whole and is really only worth buying if you find it in a "bargain tub" sale for about £2.00 or so. So many of the individual bits are splendid it is a great pity that they don't "join up". Perhaps the reason was that Oramo abadoned his "Mahler set-up" of the orchestra (firsts and seconds divided across the stage and basses to the rear), used so effectively the year before this recording. Did Warner make him change this?
