A serial killer Katherine White is executed by lethal injection for her crimes. One of the reporters present at the execution visits the dead womans Uncle Julian(Vincent Price) to try to understand Katherine's motives. The uncle then proceeds to tell four gruesome stories to illustrate the fact that the town of Oldfield made his niece evil.
In the first, a myopic, introverted loner Stanley Burnside(a wonderful performance by an unrecognisable Clu Gulager) lusts after one of his co workers. When she rejects his advances, he strangles her. Stanley isnt adverse to a bit of necrophilia though. Quite a sick tale with an enjoyably over the top climax.
The second tale introduces us to greedy Jesse Hardwick, who is fatally wounded by two men that he swindled. He manages to drag himself into a boat, and drifts down river. He wakes up in the house of a mysterious recluse, who partakes in strange rituals at night. Soon, greed takes over Hardwick again, and he demands to know the secret of his benefactors eternal youth. A wonderful little story, with a haunting music score, and a great twist at the end, this is probably my favourite of the four.
The third story involves a glass eater in a travelling sideshow, who falls in love with a resident of Oldfield. However, one of the other circus people is very reluctant he should leave, and carries out a terrible revenge on the loving couple. Another great twist in this one
The fourth is an especially creepy mixture of The Beguiled and Children Of The Corn. A small group of Union soldiers, led by the sadistic Seargent Gallen(Cameron Mitchell), loot and shoot their way through post war America. They meet their match in a group of orphaned Confederate children, who take their orders from the mysterious magistrate.

******THIS REVIEW IS FOR THE SCREAM FACTORY RELEASE!!!*******

From a Whisper to a Scream is an anthology film featuring four stories. In the first, a man with a somewhat incestuous relationship with his sister decides to try and date the local beauty. When she spurns his advances and he accidentally kills her, he decides that this might be his golden opportunity. The second story is about a crook on the run from his partners who runs into a magician in the swamps who may have discovered the secret of immortality. After that we get a tale of circus freaks and the brutal consequences of attempting to leave the circus for love. Finally we get a tale of brutal thugs in the American Civil war getting their comeuppance from a band of war orphans who seem to have a similar attitude to fun and games as Hershell Gordon Lewis! All this is wrapped around with a story of a local historian played by Vincent Price discussing the towns dreadful legacy with a journalist on the day of his nieces execution.
From a whisper to a scream is a dark and bloody affair that mixes Tales from the crypt style story telling, southern Gothic atmosphere and 1980's blood and guts. Certainly it owes some small debt to the Amicus anthology's that preceded it but director Jeff Burr has incorporated a lot more modern attitudes to the film that may be off putting to some of the fans of the British anthology pictures. However, so long as you can stomach a little splatter From a Whisper to a Scream is an ultimately rewarding and for the most part well executed film. It was director Jeff Burrs first professional feature and quite amazingly given the cast members involved, including Clu Gulagher, Price and Cameron Mitchell the project was independently funded and shot in Burr's home town.

Although I usually like and enjoy anthology movies this one left me a little disappointed. It is only because Vincent Price is in it I will probably watch it again, with the emphasis on probably.

Interesting macabre tales that lack a bit of punch. Nice to see Vincent Price though.
