4.0 out of 5 stars Buy it for the hits you know, plus hear others you missed, 5 Sep 2005
By S. BENNETT "steviebhh" (Devon, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Part 1 of the collection showed Toyah in her true 'indie' moments, with a raw and more band orientated sound, whereas this covers the point 'post It's A Mystery' where maybe the image took hold and she became a little over-killed on TV. But this is a great collection for both new and old fans alike. The classics such as I Wanna Be Free and Thunder in the Mountains are there, plus some other successful but less remembered singles such as the dramatic 'Rebel Run' and upbeat 'Be Proud Be Loud'. Highlight for me is 'The Vow' - a beautiful ballad (not something you would expect from her at the time). For old fans you've pretty much heard it all, bought the t-shirt etc, but you'll be buying it anyway! For newcomers, buy both volumes to hear how Toyah moved and changed over the 5 years - you'll get all the hits, plus some others you'll wish you heard earlier and it may just inspire you to see, and hear what happened next. By the way, for those too young to remember, this contains a & b sides of little plastic discs called 'singles' which spun round on a turntable, and were played through a needle. The b-sides usually had new tracks, and some singles weren't even on albums! It's true.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brave New Worlds, 23 Oct 2006
Part 1 left you as Toyah achieved her first commercial success with 'It's A Mystery'. Here the story continues with what most people will recognise as her hits. As with the previous release, here we have the A-sides and B-sides of Toyah's singles, this time from the release of 'I Want To Be Free' through to her departure from the Safari label.

'I Want To Be Free' opens the album with a state of intent and hasn't lost any of its catchy, playground aggression. B-sides 'Walkie Talkie' and 'Alien' (both based on previous recordings) show the band's penchant for the odd and the theatical respectively. More obviously than with the previous collection, here you have a clear contrast between the blatant pop-based sensibilities of the singles themselves and their more experimental flip-sides. So for every 'Thunder In The Mountains' there's a 'Street Addict' (a song that actually sounds stoned), for every 'Rebel Run' there's a 'Baptised In Fire'. It's perhaps most interesting viewing the B-sides in their own right as some of them ('Voodoo Doll', 'I Explode', 'Warrior Rock') would have made very good A-sides.

The only low of this collection are the tracks from the 'Four More From Toyah' EP, two of which are decidedly less catchy than anything else featured here ('Urban Tribesmen's never ending final chorus seems to drag on forever, crawling desperately for the three minute mark) and the favoured 'Good Morning Universe' having a slightly over-produced quality. The only track of the four that is remotely up to the standard of the rest of the album is 'In The Fairground' with its haunting verses, upbeat chorus and creepy outro.

Also here is the 1982 remix of 'Ieya', for the first time in its entirety. The original release was an edited version (now a bonus track on the re-issue of 'The Changeling') whereas here the full five minutes sees its first commercial release.

Of the latter tracks included here, the final three show that Toyah was far from running out of steam. The beautiful ballad 'The Vow' may not have made much impression on the UK chart, but stands out as one of Toyah's best singles. The curiously familiar 'I Explode' is full of life and energy and the closing track 'Haunted' combines guitar driven verses with a dreamy chorus.

As with its predecessor, this release has extensive liner notes and images once more showing the care Cherry Red have taken in compiling it. Focussing on the commercially successful years, this collection may not have the raw grit of Part 1, but shows exactly why Toyah remained so popular in the early 1980s with her energy and stunning visuals. This release completes a collection of some of her best music and, alongside Part 1, provides you with her ultimate greatest hits.
