Having bought both of the earlier box sets of Lewis' Beethoven piano sonata cycle, I confess I added this disc largely for the sake of completeness (there is one further release to be made next, to fill in the gaps).

The qualities that were so much in evidence in the first two boxes also apply to this disc. Lewis is a reliable guide to these works and while I would not call call his playing lacking in character, it is refreshingly free of personal idiosyncracy. Lewis is the first pianist whose playing I can enjoy as much as Emil Gilels in these works - which is a major compliment to Mr Lewis.

As before the recording quality is top-notch - the piano is captured faithfully in a sympathetic acoustic, and the recorded sound has great projection. All in all this is an excellent disc, well worth acquiring. I'm sure I will return to it with great pleasure in future.

There are so many "cycles" of Beethoven's wonderful sonatas available, that it seems hard to justify yet another set. Nevertheless, Paul Lewis takes a seat at the top table, and this CD is very highly recommended.

I have sets by Barenboim on EMI from the 1960s and 1970s, Artur Schnabel on Naxos Historical from the 1930s, Rudolph Serkin on Sony from the 1950s and 1960s and various other performances from the likes of Pollini, for example. These are, naturally, all very different interpretively.

In my non-expert way, I would say that Paul Lewis imposes a little less of his personality on this music, allowing Beethoven's voice to sing. In other words, an almost ideal interpretation.

The clincher is the fantastic engineering and sound quality from Harmonia Mundi.

Utterly compelling!

Paul lewis is quite simply a star-- his playing encompasses every emotion-- his touch is delicate and then powerful, such understanding and sensitivity-- never before have Beethoven piano sonatas come through with such clarity and lucidity and emotion-- everything is there - this cd and all the other sonatas in the series are just brilliant!
