Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Preview

In a nutshell:
Video games based on movies have never had a terrific track record but this looks like breaking the mould forever. Not only is the Peter Jackson himself involved; but so is the Michel Ancel, creator of video game classics such as Rayman. The results look extraordinary.

The lowdown:
You take on the roles of both Jack Driscoll and the mighty Kong. Being the big monkey is great, naturally, but the feeling of power is neatly turned on its head when you play as the considerably more vulnerable Jack. Overall, it's an intense, absorbing romp.

Most exciting moment:
Escaping down some white water rapids as a puny human, chased by two tyrannosaurs rex.

Since you ask:
Peter Jackson loved Michel Ancel's Beyond Good & Evil game so much that he asked him to make Kong.

The bottom line:
Potentially, the most cinematic video game ever made.
Harrison Dent

4.0 out of 5 stars Not bad, not bad at all..., 28 April 2006
By Mr. S. E. C. Norman "pink52" (London, UK) - See all my reviews
    (REAL NAME)
    Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
This game isn't as spectacular or impressive as the film-but it's still a very good effort that harkens (in my opinion) to similar quality from the Lord of the Rings games-Jackson obviously is a gamer as well as a filmmaker.
The story isn't anything special-you land on the island, you fight as Jack to rescue Ann Darrow and Kong to protect and keep her-all in the face of a variety of Skull Island nasties, insects, dinosaurs, crabs, natives, man-eating fish and birds. But if you liked the film, you'll like the game-there are the characters of Ann, Jack, Carl, Jimmy and Hayes-with the actors voices (or a good imitation) in place (in fact a whole multitude of quite decent dialogue)-plus the story plays out well with clips from the film and a residue of the emotional capacity of the film present as well. Furthermore, the environments are nicely designed-with damp caves dripping with water, wide valleys of overhanging trees, reeds, grass and shrubs, as well as a number of ruins and other signs of human civilization among the forests and grasslands. It's also quite creepy-no Quake 4 or F.E.A.R-but the sounds or nearby running dinosaurs or (worse) slithering centipedes and spiders is at the least disconcerting-and there are a few VERY jumpy momements-particularly in the water.
The weapons are limited-pistol, shotgun, sniper rifle, tommy gun (sadly very rare) and the almost unlimited and trusty spears and bones lying around. The command system is different but quite refreshing-normal fire uses the butt of the weapon for close combat-but for killing effect you have to aim the weapon and then shoot. While the weapons are VERY limited they are all pretty cool-with good gunshot sounds-and it is a hoot to see the crabs and raptors being blasted back as you pump shotgun slug after slug into them. The spears are very good fun-when they strike they stick into the animal-even at times pinning them to the wall or ground. Perhaps even more fun but equally basic is playing as Kong-and what's more fun than battering at T-Rexes in the pouring rain-epically fighting to pin down and break their jaws, or cast them over the edge of the waterfall.
It's not massively engaging and the graphics aren't anything particularly special-but here that's a plus as it will work on most machines and is generally a good romp for all the family-with reasonably simple puzzles, good action and of course, the joy of playing the film.

5.0 out of 5 stars You will enjoy it, but your system has to be up for it..., 30 Dec 2005
By Richard Harrison (Newcastle upon Tyne, Northumberland United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
Graphically, this game is superb. Animations are smooth and very attractive to the eye, and the gameplay is great to - depending on whether you like to use the keyboard and mouse or a PC controller is up to you, although controlling King Kong himself with the keyboard can be rather diffucult; but playing as Jack in first person mode is fine for the keyboard or controller. These two aspects give the game some longetivity too, so you won't simply finish it in half an hour.
Now onto what i said in the title. as graphically fantastic as the game is, you need a very powerful PC to experience the game in all its glory. As a bare minimum, i recommend 512mb of RAM, a 128mb Graphics card and a 2ghz processor to play the game comfortably (for no juddering or pauses) on the low graphics settings. You'll need a 3ghz processor, a 256mb graphics card and 1gb of RAM if you want to play the game with medium graphics settings or higher enabled...
Ultimately, its a great game but ensure your PC is at least up for handling it before purchasing.

    4.0 out of 5 stars A refreshing experience, 8 Aug 2006
    Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
The alternative gameplay offered in King Kong is a refreshing experience in the line of first-person-shooters.
In the beginning I didn't like the fact that only one weapon (gun or rifle) could be carried at a time, but I quickly got used to that - and also learned to appreciate it. You see - this game is about more than just shooting. It is also about surviving in a tough environment, and it is often necessary to defend yourself (and the non-player-characters) using spears, and trust me - this is GREAT fun.
The graphics and the sound effects are good and provides a feeling of wild nature and dirt.
Please notice - your pc must be up to date.
Furthermore - there are a few flaws in the game. They sometimes appear, and they sometimes don't. You can avoid them by playing a bit different, but it would be nice with a patch though.
