4.0 out of 5 stars Good game, poor sim, 3 Mar 2006
There is much to enjoy in this game. The sound and graphics are well done (except that the tyre squeal hasn't developed since Colin McRae version 2) and there's a great deal of variety. For keyboard, gamepad and joystick gamers this may be a very good game. For those with a Force Feedback wheel and have real world driving experience or have enjoyed Grand Prix Legends (still the best after eight years) this game is very frustrating. The feel and precision required driving a Kart or a Formula Ford should be very different from that required of an American muscle car or an eighteen wheeler. Not in this game.
There is no increase in Force when the cars are heavier or when grip builds up turning into a corner. There is no decrease in Force as the wheel straightens or when the slip angle increases close to the limit of adhesion. You can't feel what the tyres are doing the way you can in real life, GPL or the NASCAR series from version 4 to 2003.
The variety of feel in Midtown Madness 2 is much better than here and MM2 doesn't even purport to be a sim. In fact the trucks in Monster Truck Madness 2 have a much more believable and enjoyable feel than in RD3 (such a shame the AI weren't more competitive).

All the cars, sorry, vehicles in RD3 drive like wet sponges. The Force Feedback is Force but not Feedback. It negates what is happening at the contact patch and frustrates the user with real world experience.
Having said all that there are some vehicles with rapid enough response to provide a good drive and once the AI are cranked up enough to provide some competition the game is a good challenge for racing. I particularly like the GT Lights and the Palmer Caterhams for this but the Forumla Palmer Audi's and the Karts, which I would love to have enjoyed, are very disappointing.
Console gamers and those still below driving age will get much more out of this than real drivers. The latter will appreciate it more if they regard it as a racing game instead of a simulation.
I'm over 50 running a Dell 9100 with a Logitec MOMO Force wheel. I use and enjoy GPL, NASCAR 2003, Midtown Madness 2, Colin McRae Rally version 2 (on Windows Me not on XP), GTR and GT Legends. I have used but no longer enjoy F1 '99-02 Challenge or the Geoff Crammond GP series (no feel) and Monster Truck Madness 2 (love the driving but there's no competition).

4.0 out of 5 stars Rules by fools, 20 Mar 2006
By A Customer
Right. First off, it is a good game; but i doubt any wally who made this actually knows the rules of motorsport and the ridiculous way it's been implemented.
Cutting corners rule is fine for online play to stop all the noobs getting ahead, but in sp mode it truly is a work of some senile bloke who rides a bicycle.
Penalty when going onto graveltrap that slows your car to 50mph or less and/or spinning ?? Not in the history of motorsport has ANYONE during qualifying or racing been given a penalty for corner cutting that has impeded their time because the car has actually slowed and actually lost valuable time during their timed lap.
Secondly, the absolute stupidity of the programmers to have a car behind you give your car a little tap and you go flying off the track causing damage. Hit them , guess what ? Doesn't phase them one iota. They don't even seem to lose a wheel or crash themselves;it happens very rarely, but when it does, you aint involved. AI=Artificial incompetence.
This game is up there, but yet again, the laziness of detail by the makers not giving a toss about realism but rather line their pockets for more zit cream and lads mags wins over.
I'm just so annoyed a great game like this has a lot of things left out or added but not properly to make it the no.1

4.0 out of 5 stars First time race fan.., 25 Feb 2006
By Mr. Jeremie Bowles "Jez" (Wales) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Well I bought this along with the Momo race wheel - which is an excellent investment. This is the first racing game Ive bought, but I have played many demos in the past, so have some baring to comment on.

First impressions, that playing the game with a wheel is really hard! Although incredibly enjoyable.. I have been frequently saying "OH ****!" as I overjudge a corner and plough straight into a barrier. My heart has been really pumping today, and I feel a bit twitchy after particuarly close races or even on the single rally stages. So im suitably impressed how immersed I feel.. as I come from a FPS, Strat and MMORPG background, and I havent had a buzz like this off any of those types of games in years.

I am a car lover, so its great to have such a huge selection of vehicles to play around with. Theres a huge range to choose from, which you have to unlock, but its not a chore, you really enjoy the challenges, and if you dont enjoy a certain class of race, then you dont have to do it.

I suspect a strong modding scene will spring up around this game, no guarantees mind, so I think longevity will increase as fans build more cars and tracks to play with. Only time will tell.

I am very happy that my investment has brought as much unexpected joy as it has. Bearing in mind that your going to need this game and a wheel if you dont already have one. You can pick up the ultra cheap saitek wheel for around £15, but I highly recommend you splash out on the Logitech Momo Racing wheel, especially if your a motor head.

So 4 stars, as you will have to like racing or cars, to get any kind of enjoyment beyond a week. Goes without saying really, but it is essentially a sim (although you can set it up as an arcade racer.. but wheres the skill in that?) and as such requires a certain amount of dedication.
