Rare Sonic!, 11 Nov 2005
Sonic is back on the PS2 with a new collection, with 3 rare classics. With this collection you can play the cult arcade classic, Sonic The Fighters (first time on a console). This cartoon fighting-game really shines on the multi-player, but can be a bit boring on your own. Sonic R on the other hand is an fantastic racing-game. Both the multi-player and single-player is exellent. Look for secrets, play time-trial, and unlock hidden characters. This is based on the PC-edition (not the Saturn-edition), so it has sharper graphics and features different weather-effects when you play. You will love this! The last 'gem' on this collection is the mighty Sonic CD. This is why you should buy this collection. Fantastic graphics, exellent 'tecno'-soundtrack, and great gameplay, makes this the ultimate Sonic-adventure for many fans. I really love this because its so very playable, and different everytime you play it thru. This is also based on the pc-edition (not the MegaCD-edition), so it has sharper graphics, and the opening/ending movies run perfectly without any mess. The collection also features a lot of Game Gear classic (7). Some of the games can be fun to try out, but most of them is just to 'fill up the collection'. It also features Vectorman 1 & 2 as a bonus. Like the mentioned Street of Rage (that features as a bonus on the Japanese-edition of SGC), it has absolutely nothing to do with the world of Sonic(!) Why those two titles are included in the collection is a mystery. But of the two titles, Vectorman is at least a ok platform-game... This collection is really a GEM for any blue Sonic-fan, but for anyone else maybe Sonic Mega Collection will be a better blast? Thats why I have given it only 4 stars. But blue as I am, I absolutely love it!

Gems Maybe, Not As Good As The Mega Collection, 24 Oct 2008
Fun:3.0 out of 5 stars
In 2005, Sega finally released a collection of rarities for the PlayStation, Sonic Gems Collection, a collection of Sonic the Hedgehog related games that were on PC, Game Gear, Arcade and the rather niche Sega Saturn, which really put the nail in the coffin of the Sega hardware side of production.
The best game on here is Sonic R, by miles. The racing is good fun and reminds me of Mario Kart, with it's cute characters and jumps. The other great thing is this was one of the first games to have a decent soundtrack, I know it's pretty awful J-Techno, but it's a lot better than the quad-polyphony of the MegaDrive, which if you jumped you lost part of the main melody. Anyway the racing is good fun and is suitable for younger players, as it's relatively non-violent.
Sonic Fighters was a hit on the arcade where you can fight as Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Amy and many more characters (9 total). The single mode is rather boring after a while, but it was as challenging as Tekken, just not as exciting. Obviously you need to work at it to get Dr Robotonik as a fighter.
The other games are rather banal; even Sonic CD got on my nerves - but I was more into Sonic's 2D adventures. The Game Gear stuff is OK but you can tell it's been shoved in there last minute, bit of an oversight. Though very happy they have not "remixed" anything - they could have made the game full screen rather than stretching it with the right stick making it a touch blocky on a > 24 inch screen. Imagine trying to play these on a 50" plasma.... I dare not!
This is great, and will be a great memorial to Sonic of the past, and remind people of here he is now and where he will probably go in the future (probably a MMRPG!) and let kids nowadays experience the thrills of the consoles gone by and how gaming has evolved from a simple 2D image into a franchise worth millions today.
If you like the old Sonic games, get Sonic Mega Collection (PS2), otherwise if you've played them to death and just want something else, get this.

What a wasted collection, 7 Oct 2005
As I mentioned in my previous review about the Sonic Mega Collection Plus, Sega made a mistake leaving out Sonic CD. They've mixed that mistake now though with the release of Sonic Gems. Sonic Gems gives Sonic CD, Sonic Fighters, Sonic R and more Game Gear games in the collection, and Vector Man 1 and 2. Doesn't sound so bad, does it? Well once again Sega's messed up. Sonic CD is excellent, I admit it, it's got a good time travel feature and it's got a decent challenge. Sonic Fighters is dull, but if you like beat 'em ups then I'm sure you'll enjoy it. Sonic R is as fun as watching Eastenders for hours, it makes you fall asleep. Many of the Game Gear games are terrible with the one exception of the surprisingly good Tails Adventure. Vector Man is alright, if you like a pointless mess. But here's where the mistake comes in. The Japanese version comes with Streets of Rage 1, 2 and 3, plus some other game. Sega has left out Streets of Rage because of all this silly interference about video game violence. They believe that many gamers who would play Streets of Rage would re-enact the fun and sometimes frantic fights of the games. Now really, just how stupid would adults be to do that? These are old games from the 90s, who in their right mind would want to try the moves in those games? It would take some seriously bad upbringing to cause that, I should know after the life I've lived. But I would never re-enact the fights in the games, they're only games after all and their fun.I was looking forward to this collection and I must say that I am disappointed due to Streets of Rage not being left in, that would have increased it's playablity by months instead of a couple of days. The unlockable artwork, demos and movies aren't enough when you take in how much of the unlocking system you have to do. It's an okay collection that would have greatly improved from having Streets of Rage left in, plus Chaotix and maybe an Echo game or a Phantasy Star being added in. But as it stands, this collection is sorely lacking and not even Sonic CD is enough of a highlight to warrent a purchase. Rent first and see what you think, I made the mistake of buying it first. If Sega or anyone who works for Sega is reading this, please re-release thise with Streets of Rage, Echo, Phantasy Star, Chaotix and something decent, anything that isn't a dull Game Gear game. And improve the unlocking system, it's annoying and not funny. Ditch the lousy extras as well, make it a true collection. Disappointing, a shame really.
