3.0 out of 5 stars Loads of different racing, but not all of it is that good..., 30 Jun 2006
Fun:3.0 out of 5 stars
If variety is your thing and you like a bit of racing too, TOCA 3 is the game for you. You can race vehicles on road, off road, over road, under road and of all different shapes and sizes. But it's a double-edged sword.

On the one hand, the variety is great as you get to try your hand at lots of different styles of racing, but on the other it is a weakness as some of them are rubbish and you feel as though you are being forced to play through it in order to make progress. The difficulty level of the different racing types also varies wildly. Often a good qualifying time will get you at the front of the grid, and as long as you start well you can stay well out in front. It is no great challenge.

Other races are much more difficult and the slightest error will cost you places that you cannot possibly get back. It's very frustrating as the difficulty lurches about between the classes rather than scale up as you work though the game.

On offer is the World Tour, which offers loads of different racing types in mini championships, and Pro Career mode, which gives the chance to race through a full season of just one type. Progress can be saved within these, but be careful, you can only save a World Tour championship or a Pro Career season at one time - if you switch mid-season from Pro Career to World Tour you lose the save! This is not explained in the manual or in the game and leads to early frustration.

Graphically, TOCA 3 is OK. It moves at a fair pace and does the job without being particularly spectacular. The sound is fine, it makes engine noises and the tyres screech when they should. There you go.

Multiplayer is well put together and as long as you can put yourself against players of a similar skill level, it's good fun.

So lots of variety but all of it is OK without being great. There are no British or World Touring Cars, which were the strengths of the earlier games in this series. Codemasters have clearly decided more is more, but I would rather have less but be given proper championships and more detailed racing. Just because there are such things as monster truck racing and classic rallying, it does not mean they will necessarily be that much fun to play.

The racing and handling in TOCA 3 is generally good, there is some great action to enjoy and the multiplayer works well. Buy this game if you like lots and lots and lots (and lots) of variety, but don't expect all of it to be particularly well done.

4.0 out of 5 stars TOCA Race Driver 3, 2 Mar 2006
By Nigel Randtoul (Crawley, West Sussex United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
Well worth the wait, a race sim that should meet every racers needs and thank goodness they dropped the daft storyline from the earlier race drivers.
Car & track choice is immense.
Sounds are superb especially the F1 cars.
Graphics not quite up to GT4 standard but who's looking at the scenery at the speeds involved here ?
Infinatly adjustable races, you chose race length, AI level, practice laps everything, making it totally playable whoever you are.
Special mention must go to Codemasters who are one of the few makers who will supply the codes to unlock all parts of the game, this is great if you don't have the time to win all the classes to unlock everything or just want to get on and race the cars you want to. This should also increases the market appeal for the game.
These facts should make it is everything you want it to be.
Yes its different to GT4, but they both satify different needs but no car gamers collection is complete without this & GT4.
Best way to enjoy is to get the unlock codes and tailor the races of your choice to your desires. Anything from a Honda lawnmower to a Williams F1 car.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good but not as good as it could be!, 21 Mar 2006
By Mr. M. T. German "markg216" (United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Firstly don't let my title put you off, if you've never owned one of this series then its great! I've bought these titles ever since the original "toca touring cars" series on PS1 and feel that even though the game has a lot different options, the plot has been lost, there isn't even a BTCC class of touring cars in the game now.Apart from DTM racing the true touring car element has been lost.
OK that was the bad news but the good news is that this is a highly addictive game for racing fans, the graphics are not as good as the GT series but there is plently of realism, you make a mistake and you pay for it. The selection of tracks is better than ever, there are a few more UK circuits back in the game now and also 3 variations of Silversone.A few of the modern circuits such as Bahrain and China are also included.
We still have the mechanic/race engineer in the video scenes between races,a bit more of the video scenes telling a story as in race driver 2 would have been nice but thats just down to preference.
If you are a race fan its a must buy, but please lets have more touring car and less F1 and rally, if I want to buy an F1 or rally game there is plenty to chose from, having said that the historic GP racing is great!
