With this eigth volume of Philip Martin's super Gottschalk set, we are further into the less well-known of the composer's works. Nonetheless, if they are not great as Chopin was great, the pieces are still charming, and worth recording and hearing.

It's important that Gottschalk now has something like his proper place in the musical canon. Martin and Hyperion are such good advocates for this music; Martin by his superb playing, and Hyperion by thier superb recording and presentation.


Volume 8 of the Martin/Hyperion set might not necessarily be the place to start if you've never heard Gottschalk before, but it's certainly a worthy addition to the Gottschalk discography.
